Club targets improvement after debut league campaign as Off-Season Championship challenge begins

Huki Futsal Club is looking to build on an encouraging debut Kaliki Futsal League campaign as it turns its attention to the Bulkshop Off-Season Championship, with both teams aiming to improve on their performances.
Huki 1 FC finished fifth and Huki 2 FC ninth among 21 teams in the Kaliki Futsal League, giving the young club an encouraging foundation as it continues to develop its players and strengthen its competitiveness.
Team manager Rodrick Jeriel Pisaa said the campaign had provided valuable lessons for both teams, particularly in teamwork, discipline, commitment and consistency.
“Despite the challenges, our players remained committed, and this experience has motivated us to aim higher,” Pisaa said.
He said the club intends to improve its players’ fitness, technical skills, tactics and teamwork through more consistent training.
Pisaa added that management will also work on improving planning and organisation to ensure the club is better prepared for future competitions.
“Our target is to compete with confidence, gain valuable experience, and achieve better results,” he said of the club’s ambitions for the Off-Season Championship.
Huki’s next challenge is scheduled for today, where it is to face Boomgate FC at 2:30pm at Friendship Hall, Court One.
The fixture provides an early opportunity for the club to put the lessons from its Kaliki Futsal League campaign into practice as it seeks further progress in competition.
Huki has also received financial assistance from Small Malaita Constituency MP Rick Hou, represented by Sharon Sika, with the SBD 2,500 contribution covering the club’s full registration fee for the championship, according to Pisaa.
The club has additionally acknowledged support from other individuals as it continues to prepare for its competitions.
Established in 2025, Huki Futsal Club was formed to encourage young people from Makira living in Honiara to participate in sport. The club reports having more than 70 members.
Beyond its league positions, Huki says it wants to develop players, strengthen partnerships and create positive opportunities for young people through futsal.
Its immediate focus is to build on its first league experience and continue improving as it takes on the next challenge in the Off-Season Championship.

Acting Premier of Rennell and Bellona province Collin Tesuatai is warning everyone about the current El Niño dry season.
Speaking to Island Sun today, Mr Tesuatai said the national government must help rural areas immediately.
“While towns are doing okay, rural villages are facing “double trouble” because their crops are dying and their water is running out,” he said.
He said this El Niño weather is very tricky.
“Even if it rains at night, the next day is very hot and dry. In the villages, it is much hotter and crops are not growing. It is a big problem for gardens. Even if you plant food, the plants die because of the hot, dry weather. Sometimes when it rains, the ground is so hot that the water does nothing. It is like pouring water on a fire,” Tesuatai said.
He added that while people in towns can still buy food and water, people in rural villages rely entirely on their own gardens to survive.
He said water is becoming a major problem in Rennell and Bellona as people depend on rain water tanks.
“If it does not rain for one month, they run out of water. Water tanks run dry in a month. When one house runs out of water, big families have to share from their neighbours. This uses up the water very fast. Even the local wells are very low and could dry up anytime,” he warned.
Tesuatai said the proposed plan from the provincial government with the province’s Ministry of Education is to close schools if the water runs out completely.
The Acting Premier strongly calls on the national government through the responsible Ministry to send officers to check on the villages.
“The province does not have the budget to buy supplies for the people. The ministry needs to send officers to rural areas to see what is happening. We should not have to ask them. The ministry is supposed to lead this work,” Tesuatai said.
He also calls on rural people to change their mindset and prepare for bad weather, just like people in other countries do.
“We take things too lightly, but Europeans take it seriously and prepare. We must take this seriously,” he said.

Careless attitudes and the continued disregard for new developments in Auki, Malaita Province, remain a concern among members of the public, despite awareness campaigns that aim to keep the town clean.
As the province prepares for its Second Appointed Day celebrations next month, a clean-up campaign was launched on Monday this week.
Community awareness activities have also been carried out by health officials and provincial security personnel to encourage residents to maintain cleanliness throughout the town.
However, Frank Samo, Malaita Provincial Youth Coordinator has expressed frustration after reportedly seeing people spitting betel-nut residue onto newly tar-sealed roads in Auki this morning.
He said the problem is particularly noticeable at bus stops and other public areas where people gather while waiting for transport.
“Some people continue to have bad attitudes and behaviours. They spit betel-nut residue all over the town.
“But this morning was disgusting when I saw some just spitting freely without any concern,” he said.
The coordinator urges the people of Malaita Province to take responsibility in maintaining cleanliness and protecting new developments in Auki and other urban centres across the province.
“Please, my good people, we must try to be responsible for our town and dispose of our rubbish properly to keep our town clean.
“We might think that we are smart in other things, but at least we should take care and be responsible in some ways to make our town clean,” he said.
Similar concerns have been raised by other members of the public who want to see Auki remain clean, attractive and welcoming, particularly as the province prepares for its upcoming Second Appointed Day celebrations.
Residents are being encouraged to work together to maintain the town’s cleanliness and respect the developments intended to improve Auki for everyone.

Construction work on the Ahanga wharf in Rennell and Bellona Province is taking shape with workers doing piling works, structural preparations and quality assurance work continuing at the project site.
Implemented under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project aims to improve maritime connectivity and provide more reliable transport infrastructure for communities in Rennell and Bellona Province, where sea transport plays a vital role in connecting people, moving goods and supporting economic activities.
A statement from the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP) this morning said that recent construction activities have focused on continued piling works, assembly and installation of pile plug reinforcement, and preparation of temporary working platforms to support piling operations across the site. These activities are essential to establishing the foundations required for the new wharf.
LMCP said quality assurance remains a priority, with compressive strength tests conducted on concrete samples to assess their strength and ensure that construction materials meet the required technical specifications and quality standards.
Meanwhile, solar panels and associated power supply systems have been installed at the project site while routine maintenance of construction equipment has also been undertaken to maintain operational efficiency and minimise disruptions to ongoing works.

Permanent secretary of MID, Mike Qaqara said the continued progress at Ahanga highlights the importance of investing in maritime infrastructure to strengthen connectivity for island communities.
“Reliable maritime infrastructure is essential for our island communities, where sea transport plays a critical role in connecting people, moving goods and supporting economic activities. Through LMCP, the Government is working to improve transport infrastructure and strengthen connectivity for communities such as Ahanga in Renell and Bellona Province,” Mr. Qaqara said.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining construction quality, meeting environmental and social safeguards requirements, and working closely with local communities throughout project implementation.
LMCP said alongside the construction activities, coordination has continued with the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) in preparation for a site visit scheduled for this month by representatives from MID, the Contractor, and the Consultant’s management and safeguards teams.
The statement said the visit will provide an opportunity to review construction progress, discuss environmental and social safeguards, and strengthen communication between the project team and community representatives.
LMCP said this engagement is important to ensure that local concerns are considered throughout the implementation of the project.
Once completed, the new Ahanga Wharf is expected to improve maritime access and support the movement of passengers and goods, contributing to stronger transport links and improved access to economic opportunities for communities in Rennell and Bellona Province.
The Ahanga Wharf project forms part of LMCP, a major infrastructure initiative led by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the Asian Development Bank and implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
“Through LMCP, MID continues to advance transport infrastructure development aimed at strengthening maritime connectivity and supporting communities across the Solomon Islands,” the statement said.

The National Parliament of Solomon Islands (NPSI) has successfully concluded a landmark week of professional exchanges with the Parliament of New South Wales (NSW), Australia which aims to boost institutional capacity and regional cooperation.
NPSI officially announced the the wrap-up of the high-level twinning programme in a statement yesterday.
The program ran from October 7 and concluded yesterday, October 15 in Sydney.
NPSI said the initiative brought together lawmakers and parliamentary officers from Solomon Islands, the Bougainville House of Representatives, and NSW to share expertise and study modern parliamentary procedures.
The vital professional development visit was fully funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Solomon Islands delegation featured prominent parliamentary leaders, including the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Mr. Dr Paul Popora Bosawai, Chair of the Parliamentary House Committee, Mr. Franklyn Wasi, Chair of the Environment and Conservation Committee, Mrs. Mary Garu, alongside Principal Hansard Reporter Ms Sherilyn Ragoso.
“The parliamentary leaders were joined in the second phase by delegates from the Bougainville House of Representatives,” statement said.
Throughout the week, participants engaged directly with NSW MPs and officers.
They observed Question Time in both the Legislative Assembly (Lower House) and the Legislative Council (Upper House), and took part in chamber tours.
They also joined shadowing sessions that focused on committee operations, stakeholder engagement, security, and departmental services.
NPSI said that the twinning arrangement plays a crucial role in advancing democratic governance.
The program is said to have provided a platform for meaningful exchanges between the three legislatures.
NPSI said it also allowed participants to compare practices, share professional experiences and identify approaches that may strengthen parliamentary operations in their respective institutions.
For delegates like Ms Ragoso, the exchange also offered invaluable hands-on learning with the NSW Hansard team, sharpening reporting skills that will directly benefit parliamentary transparency back home.

Young footballers sweat it out for Solomon Cup spots

THE race for a place in Western Province’s Solomon Cup squad is heating up, with more than 40 young footballers putting their skills, fitness and determination to the test at JF Kennedy Stadium in Gizo.
The trials began on Wednesday, giving homegrown talents an opportunity to showcase their abilities and impress the selection panel ahead of the upcoming Solomon Cup.
The atmosphere at JF Kennedy Stadium came alive again yesterday as 24 players took to the sun-baked pitch, each hoping to catch the selectors’ eyes and move a step closer to wearing Western Province’s colours.
With the sun beating down, the young hopefuls battled through a full 90 minutes of football, demonstrating their endurance, technical skills and competitive spirit.
For the players, it was more than just a game. Every pass, tackle, run and shot offered a chance to prove that they have what it takes to earn a place in the final squad.
While the heat tested their physical strength, the pressure of selection added another challenge, with every player eager to make a lasting impression.
A few promising players have already been identified as potential members of the final squad to represent Western Province at the Solomon Cup.
However, competition remains strong, as the remaining hopefuls continue to fight for their chance to secure a place in the team.
The trials provide an important platform for young footballers in Gizo and surrounding communities to demonstrate their talent, while giving selectors an opportunity to identify players capable of carrying Western Province’s hopes into the national tournament.
As the selection process continues, one question remains on the minds of the young footballers: who will survive the trials and earn the coveted call-up to represent Western Province?
For now, the message at JF Kennedy Stadium is clear — talent may open the door, but fitness, discipline and determination will decide who makes the final cut.

The Bills and Legislation Committee (BLC) of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands has officially launched a parliamentary inquiry into the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2026, following the formal adoption of its Terms of Reference on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
The inquiry stems from an August 27 parliamentary referral under Standing Order 49 according to an official public notice issued by the National Parliament.
The draft legislation seeks to alter the Citizenship Act 2018 by introducing an additional legal ground to revoke the status of individuals who obtained their Solomon Islands citizenship through the application process.
The committee’s probe will thoroughly evaluate whether the proposed law is necessary and effective in safeguarding national security and public order without compromising constitutional rights.
Parliament’s notice highlights that the review will look closely at democratic safeguards for lawful political expression, measures to prevent individuals from being left stateless, and the overall fairness of the revocation procedures.
Additionally, lawmakers plan to scrutinise the independent capacity of the Citizenship Commission and examine why the new revocation powers specifically target citizens by application rather than the broader population.
The committee clarified that its mandate is strictly limited to review the legislative framework and its administrative implications. Consequently, it will not investigate the citizenship status or personal conduct of any identifiable individual, nor will it consider matters currently active before a court of law.
To assist its inquiry, the committee is inviting public submissions and will gather evidence from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, law enforcement, immigration authorities, and the Ministry of Finance and Treasury.
While the upcoming committee hearings will ordinarily be open to the public, the parliamentary body maintains the authority to hold private, in-camera sessions when necessary to protect national security or the public interest.
The committee is legally required to finalise its findings and submit its comprehensive report, including any recommended technical amendments, to the National Parliament by Friday, November 13, 2026.

A total of 442 students from Aligegeo Provincial Secondary School (PSS) in Malaita Province graduated yesterday.
The graduation ceremony themed “Embrace Learning for a Brighter Future” also marked the school’s 79th anniversary of educating young people under its motto, “Learning Leadership.”
Aligegeo PSS Principal Alick Bebesia in his address at the ceremony said the occasion is a proud moment for all graduates as they celebrate their achievements.
He also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the school’s coordinators, Form Six and Form Seven tutors, heads of departments, teaching staff and support staff for their collective efforts in educating and preparing students for the future.
“On behalf of the students, I wish to thank them for their collective effort to help raise our students here at this school.
“I have the honour to announce that today we will witness a total of 442 students receiving their certificates,” Bebesia said.
Reflecting on the graduation theme, Bebesia said it carries a powerful and meaningful message about the importance of education in shaping individuals, communities and the nation.
“Education is more important than attending classes, completing assignments, passing examinations or receiving certificates,” he said.
He explained that embracing learning means welcoming knowledge with an open mind, being willing to learn from others, accepting corrections, learning from mistakes and continuously improving oneself.
Bebesia reminded the graduates that learning does not end when students leave the classroom or receive their qualifications and instead is about every stage of life presenting new opportunities to learn, grow and develop.
“It helps us to understand the world around us, discover our abilities and prepare ourselves to face the challenges and opportunities of the future,” he said.
The principal also encouraged the graduates to be prepared for changes in society, particularly as new technologies, discoveries and challenges continue to transform the way people live and work.
“My dear graduates, the world you are entering is changing rapidly. New technologies, new discoveries and new challenges are transforming the way people live and work.
“The careers available in the future may require knowledge and skills that are different from those we use today. Therefore, you must develop a positive attitude towards learning and be prepared to adapt to change,” Bebesia said.
The graduates were also encouraged to embrace lifelong learning, remain open to new ideas and continue developing the knowledge and skills needed to contribute positively to their communities and the nation.
As Aligegeo Provincial Secondary School marks 79 years of educational service in Malaita Province, the graduation ceremony celebrates not only the achievements of the 442 graduands but also the school’s continuing role in educating and preparing young people for a brighter future.

The Strongim Bisnis program, in partnership with the Development Bank of Solomon Islands (DBSI), is providing new opportunities for registered micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the agriculture and tourism sectors through its Business Transport Assets Financing Facility.
The initiative was highlighted during an information session held at the Youth Hub in Chinatown, Honiara, where business owners learned about a co-financing arrangement designed to help them acquire vehicles and boats to strengthen their operations.
Under the partnership, Strongim Bisnis will contribute 40 percent grant funding, DBSI will provide a 30 percent loan, and participating businesses will contribute the remaining 30 percent.
Strongim Bisnis Partnership Manager for the Cash Crops Sector, Yolarose Houaoli, said the facility aims to improve access to transport assets, helping businesses expand their reach, connect rural producers to markets, and serve more customers.
She said the initiative will reduce the financial burden on businesses seeking to purchase essential transport assets while supporting growth and productivity across the agriculture and tourism sectors.
The program is expected to create broader economic opportunities, particularly in rural and underserved communities, by improving market access and strengthening business operations.
Eligible applicants must be legally registered businesses operating in Solomon Islands for at least three years and actively engaged in agriculture or tourism. Agricultural businesses may include those involved in coconut, cocoa and seaweed production, while tourism operators must be registered with Tourism Solomons.
The co-financing facility represents another important step toward supporting local enterprise growth, enhancing economic resilience, and promoting sustainable development across Solomon Islands.

Real Borders FC uses grassroots sport to promote youth development and positive community values

Real Borders FC is looking beyond the futsal court, using grassroots sport as a platform to bring young people together, promote discipline and encourage positive choices among communities around Borderline in Honiara.
The club, which originated from Mamulele Adventist Youth in 2025, aims to provide a welcoming environment where young people can develop their sporting talents while building friendships, teamwork and respect for others.
Real Borders FC coordinator Alwyn Maesulia said the club’s mission is captured in its slogan, Kicking Crime, Creating Champions, Making Disciples.”
Maesulia said the club believes sport can give young people a positive way to use their time while helping them develop healthy friendships and constructive habits.
“Through regular training and club activities, we want to encourage young people to make positive choices and stay engaged in something constructive,” he said.
He said the club also wants to ensure that young people from different backgrounds feel welcomed, supported and motivated to contribute positively to their communities.
Initially established as a church youth initiative, Real Borders FC has since expanded its reach to welcome young people from the wider Borderline area and surrounding communities, including Gilbert Camp, Farm, Dukwasi, Kobito and Mt Austin.
Maesulia explained that the club’s activities had slowed for a period after some members travelled overseas for further studies, while others attended schools in the provinces or took on other commitments.
However, the initiative was revived in 2026 with new members joining some from the original group.
The club now welcomes beginners as well as players with existing futsal experience, particularly boys and young men willing to learn, respect others and participate positively.
Its regular Sunday training sessions run from 6.30am to 9.30am at the SDA Kukum Slab, providing participants with opportunities to improve their fitness, skills, confidence and teamwork.
The club is also planning to introduce an additional weekday training session at the Multipurpose Hall, although Maesulia said financial constraints means the arrangements are yet to be confirmed.
Beyond training and competition, Real Borders FC hopes to create opportunities for young people to develop leadership and other positive values while building their sporting abilities.
The club is currently running its own four-team Real Borders League 2026, involving Blue, Green, Red and Black, which provides players with opportunities to gain match experience and develop their teamwork.
Maesulia said the club’s long-term vision extends beyond winning matches, with an emphasis on helping young people become positive role models in their communities.
Real Borders FC’s community-focused approach reflects its ambition to use futsal not only as a competitive sport but also as a means to encourage personal development and stronger community relationships.

The Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) has established a Credit Reporting System (CRS) through the Credit and Data Bureau Solomon Islands (CDBSI) in accordance with the Credit Reporting Regulations.
A statement from CBSI said the purpose of the Credit Reporting System is to i mprove access to credit and other financial services, support faster and more informed lending decisions, encourage responsible borrowing and repayment behavior and enable customers with good repayment records to build a positive credit history.
It will also help reduce lending risks and strengthen confidence in the financial system and promote financial inclusion and economic development in Solomon Islands.
CBSI said by sharing accurate credit information, financial institutions can better assess credit applications and provide services that are tailored to customers’ financial circumstances.
The statement said that as part of the implementation of the Credit Reporting System, participating financial institutions and authorised credit information providers will upload existing customer credit information to the Credit and Data Bureau Solomon Islands for the purpose of establishing the initial credit reporting database.
The information uploaded may include credit-related information already held by these institutions, including loan account details, repayment history, and other information permitted under the Credit Reporting Regulations.
The statement said that pursuant to Regulation 11(5) of the Credit Reporting Regulations, consumer consent is not required for the initial submission of existing customer credit information for the sole purpose of establishing the initial Credit Reporting System database.
Regulation 11(5) requires that consumers be notified that their information is being uploaded to the Credit Reporting System. This public notice is provided to ensure that customers are informed of this process.
CBSI said that while consent is not required for the initial upload of existing information, consumer consent will be required for any subsequent submission of additional credit information after the initial upload, as required under the Credit Reporting Regulations.
Accordingly, the Bank will obtain the necessary customer consent before providing any additional credit information to the Credit & Data Bureau Solomon Islands after the establishment of the initial database.
“CBSI remains committed to protecting the confidentiality and security of consumer credit information. All credit information must be collected, used, shared, and stored in accordance with the Credit Reporting Regulations and other applicable legal requirements,” the statement said.

Gizo
A COUPLE has been arrested by Gizo Police in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Western Province.
The victim, who was the biological sister of the female suspect, was allegedly living with her sister and brother-in-law when the incident occurred in 2024.
According to reports, the female suspect allegedly played a role in the rape by forcing and restraining her younger sister and removing her clothes to allow her husband to sexually assault the victim.
It was alleged that the victim reportedly sustained severe internal injuries to her private parts and was admitted to Gizo Hospital before being referred to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara for further treatment.
Sadly, the girl died from her injuries this year.
The matter was subsequently reported to Gizo Police by family members and relatives after the victim’s death.
Police investigations later led to the arrest of the couple, who were allegedly attempting to evade justice by fleeing to Guadalcanal Province.
Staff-in-charge of the Gizo Provincial Crime Investigation Division, Inspector Leonard Rokoto, confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects were apprehended last week at Lambi in Guadalcanal Province.
He said the suspects were brought back to Gizo to face further investigations.
Rokoto said charges were laid against the suspects with assistance from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Gizo.
He said the male suspect has been charged with persistent rape and murder, while the female suspect faces charges of compelling rape and murder.
Rokoto said both suspects appeared before the Western District Magistrates’ Court this week and were remanded at Gizo Correctional Facility.
He said the operation was coordinated by the Gizo Police Crime Investigation Division, with support from the Head of Department, Provincial Police Commander, Operations, and police officers in Honiara.
Rokoto described the arrests as a significant achievement for Gizo Police and a demonstration of the commitment of officers carrying out their duties.
He explained that the case was being handled in Western Province because the suspects were from the province and should be dealt with by Gizo Police.
Rokoto said handling the case locally will also help strengthen confidence and trust between police and communities.
He condemned the alleged crime and warned that police will take cases involving serious sexual offences and violence against children seriously.
The case is now before the court.

Officers from the Honiara City Council (HCC) Law Enforcement Division have intervened to stop the illegal selling of fish in front of the Mbokolo building near the Mataniko bridge earlier this week.
Director of the HCC Law Enforcement Division, Mr. Robert Madeo, confirmed to Island Sun today that officers were deployed to the site after receiving reports of vendors selling salt fish bonito in the area.
According to Mr. Madeo, the initial enforcement action took place on Monday this week. While officers successfully cleared the site on Monday, vendors returned to the area the following day.
“After removing them on that day, they continued on the next day, that is Tuesday, so from there our team go again and remove them from the site,” Mr. Madeo said.
The Director said that most of the individuals involved are vendors who typically sell salt fish bonito at the Honiara Central Market.
He emphasised that the Mataniko bridge area is entirely unsuitable for vending, particularly regarding public health and food safety standards.
“They should go and sell at the White River fish market. That is the right place. That is the advice we told them,” Mr. Madeo said.
He urges the public to act responsibly and restrict commercial trading to designated city markets.
Mr. Madeo warned that persistent non-compliance will result in penalties under the HCC Hawking Ordinance, with the council’s Health Division also prepared to step in to monitor food handling.
“I call on our good people to comply with the City’s ordinance for the safety of everyone, because this is food that people are dealing with,” he said.
He urges vendors to utilise legitimate venues and refrain from illegal street sales.

A comprehensive three-week capacity and skills training program for the Honiara City Council (HCC) Law Enforcement Division officers is scheduled to wrap up next week.
HCC Law Enforcement Division Director Robert Madeo confirmed today that the initiative will officially conclude on Thursday, 22 October 2026.
The program, which commenced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, focuses on strengthening the officers’ professional knowledge, tactical skills, and operational capability to execute lawful and effective enforcement across the capital city.
The security training is being facilitated by the China Police Liaison Team (CPLT) of the People’s Republic of China, marking an ongoing partnership in local security development.
Speaking to Island Sun today, Mr. Madeo explained that the final cohort of officers is currently undergoing the training.
The sessions have been held at the Multi-Purpose Hall Conference Room following a strict three-group rollout schedule:
• Group 1: 6–8 October 2026
• Group 2: 13–15 October 2026 (Concluding today)
• Group 3: 20–22 October 2026 (Commencing next week)
Mr. Madeo emphasised that the fundamental goal of the initiative is to support HCC law enforcement officers in their daily field duties.
“This training will directly help our officers guarantee public safety while maintaining high professional standards within the city boundaries,” Madeo said.
He added that building a solid foundation of basic law enforcement knowledge is essential to uphold peace and order in Honiara.
The Director expressed his gratitude to the China Police Liaison Team for providing the opportunity and leading the vital sessions.
“By the conclusion of the program next week, the upskilled HCC law enforcement cohort is expected to provide Honiara residents with a more secure, orderly, and safely managed urban environment,” Madeo said.

The Solrice Company Limited has reinforced its commitment to community sports development and student welfare by donating 30 bags of rice to the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Reeves Envico Volleyball League 2026.
According to a statement from SINU today, the handover ceremony took place ahead of the league’s official launch, with Solrice Company Limited General Manager Mr Bradley Forde and accompanying company staff presenting the contribution on-site.
Mr Samson Bisafo, SINU Acting Campus Life, Welfare and Sports Manager, warmly received the donation alongside members of the SINU team.
The University expressed its profound gratitude for the private sector partnership.
“SINU extends its sincere appreciation to Solrice Company Limited for its generous donation and valuable support towards the successful delivery of the Reeves Envico Volleyball League 2026,” the statement said.
The University highlighted that the generous contribution will be vital to support the seven-week tournament.
“The league is designed to bring students and community participants together to foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition across the campus,” SINU said.
SINU said initiatives like this underline the critical importance of strong partnerships between educational institutions and corporate entities to drive student engagement and youth development through sports.

THE Ministry of Home Affairs is conducting consultations on the proposed National Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Policy that aims to guide and regulate the operations of NGOs and civil society organisations in Solomon Islands.
The consultation in Gizo, Western Province, brought together representatives from the provincial government, church organisations, community leaders and other stakeholders to share their views on the proposed policy.
Director of the Civil Affairs Division within the Ministry of Home Affairs, William Misibini, told Island Sun that an NGO Task Force comprising representatives from different government ministries is in Gizo to seek public opinions on the policy.
He said the consultation aims to develop a national framework that will guide and safeguard the operations of NGOs, civil society organisations (CSOs) and other civil society groups in the country.
“At the moment, we don’t have such a policy, so currently, it is like the government and NGOs are walking on different paths.
“So, this policy will help the government and NGOs to work hand in hand to move this country forward,” Misibini said.
He said the proposed policy will also form part of the process towards establishing legislation to govern the NGO sector in Solomon Islands.
Misibini explained that consultations will be conducted in provinces where a significant number of NGOs, community-based associations and church-based organisations are registered and operating.
He said Western Province was selected as the first province for the consultation because of the large number of NGOs operating in the province.
“Following the Gizo consultation, the task force is expected to continue consultations in Malaita Province and Honiara to gather further views from stakeholders,” Misibini said.
He said the consultation process is important to ensure that the proposed policy reflects the views and experiences of organisations working at the community level.
Misibini said the proposed policy will be submitted to the government for further deliberations before being vetted by the Office of the Attorney-General once the consultations are completed.
The policy is expected to provide a foundation to strengthen cooperation between the government and NGOs, while establishing a clearer framework for the sector’s operations in Solomon Islands.

The Development Bank of Solomon Islands (DBSI) and South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) have strengthened their partnership with the launch of a $5 million loan facility that aims to empower women entrepreneurs across Solomon Islands.
The loan facility was officially launched at the DBSI office in Honiara today, with the formal handover of a $5 million cheque to SPBD to expand microfinance opportunities for women, particularly those in rural communities.
Speaking at the launch, DBSI Chief Executive Officer, Mr Aisake Radu, expressed satisfaction with the partnership, highlighting SPBD’s growth and its increasing impact on women entrepreneurs.
Mr Radu said the number of women assisted by SPBD had increased from 2,046 in 2024 to 2,557 by the end of 2025.
He also highlighted an increase in the organisation’s reported net profit from $2.3 million to $3.9 million, while its loan portfolio grew from $9.4 million to $11.5 million over the same period.
“These are positive outcomes of our relationship. We are very happy with the growth of SPBD and the success it has achieved. Its success is also our success, and we are pleased to see this partnership continue to grow,” Mr Radu said.
He described the relationship as a genuine partnership that is producing positive results through increased support for women and small business development.
Meanwhile, SPBD Director, Mr Gregory Francis Casagrande, welcomed the new financing, describing it as a major step forward in the organisation’s efforts to empower women through microloans and small business training.
Mr Casagrande said SPBD provides small loans and business training to help women establish and expand income-generating activities, improve their family living conditions and support their children’s education.
He said the new $5 million financing will enable SPBD to reach an additional 1,250 women micro-entrepreneurs across Solomon Islands.
“We are particularly proud of our relationship with DBSI. This new financing will help us reach more women across the provinces,” Mr Casagrande said.
The initiative is expected to create more opportunities for rural women to access finance, develop small businesses and improve their household incomes.
Through the partnership, DBSI and SPBD aim to strengthen women’s economic participation while supporting grassroots entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development across the country.

The National Parliament of Solomon Islands is in deep mourning following the sudden passing of Deputy Speaker and Member of Parliament for South New Georgia, Rendova, and Tetepare, Mr. David Gina.
Mr Gina passed away today at the National Referral Hospital.
In an official statement released today, Speaker of Parliament Mr. Patteson John Oti speaking on behalf of all members and staff of the National Parliament, expressed profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the late leader’s wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and constituents.
“The passing of the late David Gina is a great loss to the National Parliament and the people of Solomon Islands,” Oti said.
Oti said late Gina served the House in a position of significant responsibility, supporting the Speaker in the conduct of parliamentary proceedings and upholding the procedures and traditions of Parliament.
The Speaker highlighted Mr Gina’s extensive public service career, which spanned both provincial and national leadership levels.
“Prior to entering national politics, he served as Premier of the Western Provincial Government and held ministerial responsibilities as Minister for Rural Development,” Oti said.
Late Gina was elected to the 12th Parliament following the 2024 National General Election, where he carried the mandate of representing the people of South New Georgia, Rendova, and Tetepare.
“His contribution to parliamentary service and public leadership will be remembered with respect and appreciation,” Oti said.
Oti also encouraged grieving family members, colleagues, and constituents to draw strength from the lasting memories of his life and service.
The National Parliament has offered its continued thoughts and prayers for comfort and strength to the family and the people of his constituency during this difficult period of bereavement.
