Club targets improvement after debut league campaign as Off-Season Championship challenge begins

Huki Futsal Club is looking to build on an encouraging debut Kaliki Futsal League campaign as it turns its attention to the Bulkshop Off-Season Championship, with both teams aiming to improve on their performances.
Huki 1 FC finished fifth and Huki 2 FC ninth among 21 teams in the Kaliki Futsal League, giving the young club an encouraging foundation as it continues to develop its players and strengthen its competitiveness.
Team manager Rodrick Jeriel Pisaa said the campaign had provided valuable lessons for both teams, particularly in teamwork, discipline, commitment and consistency.
“Despite the challenges, our players remained committed, and this experience has motivated us to aim higher,” Pisaa said.
He said the club intends to improve its players’ fitness, technical skills, tactics and teamwork through more consistent training.
Pisaa added that management will also work on improving planning and organisation to ensure the club is better prepared for future competitions.
“Our target is to compete with confidence, gain valuable experience, and achieve better results,” he said of the club’s ambitions for the Off-Season Championship.
Huki’s next challenge is scheduled for today, where it is to face Boomgate FC at 2:30pm at Friendship Hall, Court One.
The fixture provides an early opportunity for the club to put the lessons from its Kaliki Futsal League campaign into practice as it seeks further progress in competition.
Huki has also received financial assistance from Small Malaita Constituency MP Rick Hou, represented by Sharon Sika, with the SBD 2,500 contribution covering the club’s full registration fee for the championship, according to Pisaa.
The club has additionally acknowledged support from other individuals as it continues to prepare for its competitions.
Established in 2025, Huki Futsal Club was formed to encourage young people from Makira living in Honiara to participate in sport. The club reports having more than 70 members.
Beyond its league positions, Huki says it wants to develop players, strengthen partnerships and create positive opportunities for young people through futsal.
Its immediate focus is to build on its first league experience and continue improving as it takes on the next challenge in the Off-Season Championship.

Young footballers sweat it out for Solomon Cup spots

THE race for a place in Western Province’s Solomon Cup squad is heating up, with more than 40 young footballers putting their skills, fitness and determination to the test at JF Kennedy Stadium in Gizo.
The trials began on Wednesday, giving homegrown talents an opportunity to showcase their abilities and impress the selection panel ahead of the upcoming Solomon Cup.
The atmosphere at JF Kennedy Stadium came alive again yesterday as 24 players took to the sun-baked pitch, each hoping to catch the selectors’ eyes and move a step closer to wearing Western Province’s colours.
With the sun beating down, the young hopefuls battled through a full 90 minutes of football, demonstrating their endurance, technical skills and competitive spirit.
For the players, it was more than just a game. Every pass, tackle, run and shot offered a chance to prove that they have what it takes to earn a place in the final squad.
While the heat tested their physical strength, the pressure of selection added another challenge, with every player eager to make a lasting impression.
A few promising players have already been identified as potential members of the final squad to represent Western Province at the Solomon Cup.
However, competition remains strong, as the remaining hopefuls continue to fight for their chance to secure a place in the team.
The trials provide an important platform for young footballers in Gizo and surrounding communities to demonstrate their talent, while giving selectors an opportunity to identify players capable of carrying Western Province’s hopes into the national tournament.
As the selection process continues, one question remains on the minds of the young footballers: who will survive the trials and earn the coveted call-up to represent Western Province?
For now, the message at JF Kennedy Stadium is clear — talent may open the door, but fitness, discipline and determination will decide who makes the final cut.

Real Borders FC uses grassroots sport to promote youth development and positive community values

Real Borders FC is looking beyond the futsal court, using grassroots sport as a platform to bring young people together, promote discipline and encourage positive choices among communities around Borderline in Honiara.
The club, which originated from Mamulele Adventist Youth in 2025, aims to provide a welcoming environment where young people can develop their sporting talents while building friendships, teamwork and respect for others.
Real Borders FC coordinator Alwyn Maesulia said the club’s mission is captured in its slogan, Kicking Crime, Creating Champions, Making Disciples.”
Maesulia said the club believes sport can give young people a positive way to use their time while helping them develop healthy friendships and constructive habits.
“Through regular training and club activities, we want to encourage young people to make positive choices and stay engaged in something constructive,” he said.
He said the club also wants to ensure that young people from different backgrounds feel welcomed, supported and motivated to contribute positively to their communities.
Initially established as a church youth initiative, Real Borders FC has since expanded its reach to welcome young people from the wider Borderline area and surrounding communities, including Gilbert Camp, Farm, Dukwasi, Kobito and Mt Austin.
Maesulia explained that the club’s activities had slowed for a period after some members travelled overseas for further studies, while others attended schools in the provinces or took on other commitments.
However, the initiative was revived in 2026 with new members joining some from the original group.
The club now welcomes beginners as well as players with existing futsal experience, particularly boys and young men willing to learn, respect others and participate positively.
Its regular Sunday training sessions run from 6.30am to 9.30am at the SDA Kukum Slab, providing participants with opportunities to improve their fitness, skills, confidence and teamwork.
The club is also planning to introduce an additional weekday training session at the Multipurpose Hall, although Maesulia said financial constraints means the arrangements are yet to be confirmed.
Beyond training and competition, Real Borders FC hopes to create opportunities for young people to develop leadership and other positive values while building their sporting abilities.
The club is currently running its own four-team Real Borders League 2026, involving Blue, Green, Red and Black, which provides players with opportunities to gain match experience and develop their teamwork.
Maesulia said the club’s long-term vision extends beyond winning matches, with an emphasis on helping young people become positive role models in their communities.
Real Borders FC’s community-focused approach reflects its ambition to use futsal not only as a competitive sport but also as a means to encourage personal development and stronger community relationships.

The Solrice Company Limited has reinforced its commitment to community sports development and student welfare by donating 30 bags of rice to the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Reeves Envico Volleyball League 2026.
According to a statement from SINU today, the handover ceremony took place ahead of the league’s official launch, with Solrice Company Limited General Manager Mr Bradley Forde and accompanying company staff presenting the contribution on-site.
Mr Samson Bisafo, SINU Acting Campus Life, Welfare and Sports Manager, warmly received the donation alongside members of the SINU team.
The University expressed its profound gratitude for the private sector partnership.
“SINU extends its sincere appreciation to Solrice Company Limited for its generous donation and valuable support towards the successful delivery of the Reeves Envico Volleyball League 2026,” the statement said.
The University highlighted that the generous contribution will be vital to support the seven-week tournament.
“The league is designed to bring students and community participants together to foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition across the campus,” SINU said.
SINU said initiatives like this underline the critical importance of strong partnerships between educational institutions and corporate entities to drive student engagement and youth development through sports.

Workplace sports are providing Solomon Power and Solomon Telekom staff an opportunity to improve their physical fitness, strengthen teamwork and promote healthier lifestyles beyond their daily professional responsibilities.
The two organisations recently held their annual Staff Games at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS), bringing employees together for friendly sporting competition and social interaction, according to a report published by the National Sports Council (NSC) on October 14.
Now in its fourth year, the initiative highlights how sport can contribute to workplace well-being by encouraging employees to remain physically active while building stronger relationships among colleagues.
This year’s programme also introduced touch rugby as a new activity, adding variety to the Games and giving staff another opportunity to participate in sport.
Solomon Power Social Committee president Linford Karani described the initiative as an important opportunity for employees to engage in healthy activities, improve physical fitness and strengthen teamwork, emphasising that “health is wealth”.
Similarly, Telekom HR and Business Support Team member Audrina Aruafu highlighted the wider benefits of the Games, saying the initiative went beyond competition to promote staff motivation, team bonding, health and well-being.
The annual gathering demonstrates how sporting activities can create opportunities for employees from different organisations to connect outside their usual working environments, while encouraging physical activity as part of everyday life.
Both organisations acknowledged the NSC for supporting the Games at SINIS, expressing hope that the initiative will continue and expand in the coming years.
The NSC has continued to encourage companies, organisations and workplaces to utilise its sporting facilities to support active lifestyles and build healthier, more connected communities.
As the Staff Games enter their fifth year in 2027, the initiative provides an opportunity for the two organisations to build on the programme’s existing foundation and explore further ways of encouraging employee participation in sport.

Solomon Islands target strong campaign at OFC Beach Soccer Nations Cup and 2027 FIFA World Cup qualification

Solomon Islands’ national beach soccer team, Bilikiki, have departed for Tahiti yesterday, to represent the country at the OFC Beach Soccer Men’s Nations Cup 2026, with a place at the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup among the major prizes at stake.
The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) confirmed the team’s departure in a post on its official social media platform, calling on the nation to rally behind the team as it prepares for the regional competition.
“Fly high, play with passion, and bring it home, Bilikiki!” SIFF said, while encouraging supporters to share their best wishes, prayers and messages of encouragement for the national side.
The tournament will run from October 22 to 31 in Tahiti, with matches scheduled at Aorai Tini Hau in Papeete, according to the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC).
The Bilikiki will face four other teams in the competition, including hosts and defending champions Tahiti, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
Beyond the regional title, the teams will also be competing for qualification to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2027, giving the tournament added significance for Solomon Islands.
The Bilikiki will be looking to improve on their performance at the previous edition hosted in Honiara in 2025, where Solomon Islands finished runners-up, according to Solomon Star.
Their return to Tahiti also presents a fresh challenge against some of the region’s strongest beach soccer nations, particularly the hosts, who have established themselves as a major force in the sport.
With the tournament approaching, the national side will now look to complete its preparations before the opening matches get underway.

FFSI seeks funding for men’s team to compete at 2027 World Floorball Championships in Spain

Floorball Federation Solomon Islands (FFSI) is appealing for sponsorship support to send its men’s 3v3 national team to the 2027 World Floorball Championships in Spain, with airfares expected to be the biggest expense for the country’s campaign.
FFSI president Adam Olofsson confirmed the sponsorship appeal in a recent Facebook post, saying the support will help the team defend its 25th-place world ranking and aim for a stronger finish at the international competition scheduled for June 11–13, 2027.
Olofsson told Island Sun that airfares were the main financial challenge, with a return flight estimated at around SBD20,000 per player.
He said the federation hoped to send between seven and 10 players, alongside two officials, to the tournament in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, northwest of Madrid.
“Main expenses are flights, food and accommodation are not so expensive,” Olofsson said in a message outlining the team’s travel costs.
With airfares estimated at SBD20,000 per player, the cost for seven players alone would reach approximately SBD140,000, rising to SBD200,000 for 10 players, before accounting for officials and other expenses.
Olofsson confirmed that two officials will accompany the team, including the coach, who would travel from Australia.
Beyond defending its current world ranking, the team is targeting a stronger performance at the 2027 championship.
“Win, and play even better than last time with new tactics,” Olofsson said when asked about the team’s objectives for the tournament.
According to the International Floorball Federation’s latest 3v3 world rankings, published on October 9, Solomon Islands is ranked 25th in the men’s category, with 67 points.
The 2027 championship will be held from June 11–13 in Spain, bringing together men’s and women’s teams for the international 3v3 competition.

Junior Kurukuru U12 trials set for tomorrow as SALT targets Australian Nationals opportunity

Promising young futsal players have been given another opportunity to progress towards international competition, with Sports and Leadership Training (SALT) scheduled to conduct Junior Kurukuru Under-12 boys’ trials in Honiara tomorrow.
The trials will take place at Friendship Hall from 2pm to 4pm on Tuesday, October 13, as part of preparations for the 2027 Mitre National Futsal Championships in Queensland, Australia.
In a notice shared on its official social media platform, SALT said the selected schoolboys were identified by its leaders based on their performances in the Bulk Shop School Futsal League.
SALT said the selection process was conducted fairly, without what it described as a “wantok system or favouritism”, while encouraging teachers to inform the selected students and ensure they attend the trials.
The initiative forms part of SALT’s Futsal Development and Pathway Program, which aims to nurture young talent and prepare future Solomon Islands representatives through early exposure to competition outside the country.
The proposed opportunity would give the young players a chance to experience a higher level of futsal and develop their skills against competitors from Australia’s established futsal system.
The 2027 Mitre National Futsal Championships will run from January 12 to 16 at the Gold Coast Sport and Leisure Centre in Carrara, Queensland, according to Football Australia. The competition includes boys’ divisions from Under-12 to Under-16, alongside several men’s and women’s categories.
SALT’s latest announcement builds on its broader school and community futsal development work in Solomon Islands.
In April, the National Sports Council reported that SALT, NSC and Bulk Shop were working together to support school and community competitions, training and development pathways, with Friendship Hall serving as a central venue for the programme.
Beyond competition, the programme aims to use futsal to develop discipline, teamwork and leadership among young people while identifying talent capable of progressing to higher levels of the sport.
SALT has called on schools to support the process by ensuring the selected boys are informed of the trials, as the organisation continues its stated mission of “Developing Talent. Building Character. Creating Pathways.”
Mango, Keana and Leslie commit to 2027 OFC Pro League campaign

Solomon Kings FC have begun shaping their squad for the 2027 OFC Pro League season after confirming the re-signing of three Solomon Islands internationals — goalkeeper Philip Mango and forwards Don Keana and Bobby Leslie.
The club announced the trio’s return in a post on its official social media platform, marking its first confirmed player re-signings ahead of the second edition of Oceania’s professional football competition.
The announcement follows the club’s confirmation that Australian coach Ben Cahn will remain as head coach for the 2027 campaign, providing continuity as Solomon Kings prepare for another season against some of the region’s leading clubs.
Mango, Keana and Leslie bring experience from the inaugural campaign, with their retention providing the club with a familiar group of players as preparations continue.
Mango captained Solomon Kings during their first OFC Pro League season, featuring in all 14 regular-season matches, according to specialist football publication Oceania Football Center.
Keana featured in 13 appearances during the inaugural campaign, while Leslie contributed two goals in the competition. Leslie also represented Central Coast FC in the 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League, scoring twice during the group stage.
Their return provides Solomon Kings with experienced options in goal and attack as the club looks to build on its first season in the professional competition.
The re-signings come as the club prepares for a second campaign following a fifth-place finish in the inaugural regular season, when it collected 18 points from 14 matches, with five wins, three draws and six defeats.
Solomon Kings missed out on the semi-final play-offs in 2026, but will have another opportunity to challenge for honours under Cahn next season.
The 2027 OFC Pro League is scheduled to begin on January 22, with Solomon Kings set to face Vanuatu United FC in the opening match. Honiara’s National Stadium will also host the competition’s final on June 6, giving local supporters the prospect of seeing the championship decided on home soil.
The club is yet to announce whether further player re-signings or new additions will follow.

Jackson Ridge’s very own J-Ridge Futsal Club has officially punched its ticket to the prestigious SIFF National Futsal Super League 2027, following a hard-fought victory 5-3 against Futsal GC in the Promotion-Relegation Playoffs over the weekend.
Speaking exclusively to the Island Sun yesterday, J-Ridge Futsal Club team manager Mr. Jaydee Nomisasa expressed immense pride in the team’s historic milestone, emphasising that the achievement belongs to the entire community.
“The victory marks a monumental chapter for our boys and our community,” he said.
He said coming from the grassroots level to secure a spot in the premier national competition proves that with unity, hard work, and faith, our youth can achieve greatness beyond the neighbourhood.
“The journey to the national stage was no walk in the park. Entering the season as clear underdogs, J-Ridge FC first had to conquer the Bulkshop Community League,” he said.
After a shaky start that saw them drop four consecutive matches following an opening win, the team rallied together, navigating through a massive field of 32 teams before defeating Windy Hills in the Grand Final to claim the championship trophy.
Revived by friends Michael Samani and Jaydee Nomisasa, the club was built to give young people facing local challenges such as limited employment and structured recreation—a sense of belonging and purpose.
Nomisasa said that community spirit was further cemented during a celebration on 13 September, attended by notable figures including Minister for Women, Children, Youth and Family Affairs Mr. John Maneniaru, then Acting Australian High Commissioner H.E. Andrew Schloeffel, Bulkshop company directors, and Pastor Nacanieli Seru of SALT Community Outreach.
Head Coach Milton Taolo praised the unwavering dedication of his players throughout the gruelling campaign.
“People see the results, but they do not always see the work and sacrifice behind them,” Coach Taolo said.
Taolo said winning the Community League gave them confidence, but the playoffs demanded another level of discipline.
He added that the players understood what was at stake and gave everything for the team and the community.
Captain Junior Boga echoed similar sentiments after securing promotion and said that the team carried the hopes of their families and supporters onto the court.
What began as a humble community initiative to bring youths together has transformed into a national success story.
“A lot of people may not have expected us to come this far, but we believed in each other,” Boga said. “We played for our families, our supporters, and Jackson Ridge.”
He added that winning the Community League was special, but qualifying for the National Futsal Super League gives them the opportunity to represent their community on a bigger stage.
As J-Ridge FC prepares for its debut in the country’s premier futsal competition next year, the club stands as a shining testament to what grassroots sports and community backing can achieve.

CHILDREN have been given an opportunity to showcase their sporting talents and enjoy the benefits of physical activity during a weeklong sports carnival at Kukudu School in Western Province.
The event, which concluded on Thursday October 8, brought together students from seven primary schools to compete in various field and ball games, highlighting the importance of school-based sports development.
Western Province Sports Coordinator Jim Ben described the carnival as a success, praising the teachers, students, families and organising committee for their commitment to developing sports among young people.
He encouraged schools to continue organising similar events to provide children with opportunities to develop their sporting abilities, teamwork and confidence.
Ben said school-based sports programmes could nurture future athletes who would represent Western Province and Solomon Islands at higher levels of competition.
He also acknowledged the dedication of teachers, saying their involvement played an important role in making the event possible.
Ben said the Western Provincial Government would continue supporting well-organised schools and communities through its sports development programmes.
“This is part of the current provincial government’s policy direction – that is to support rural sports development.
“The Provincial Sports Division will support well-organised school and community sports,” he said.
Ben said the division was planning to organise an inter-secondary school sports carnival early next year as part of efforts to strengthen school-based sports development and identify talented young male and female athletes.
Meanwhile, Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Education Director Lindon Ligo welcomed the participation of children in the carnival.
He encouraged teachers to continue promoting physical education, saying sports could contribute to children’s learning and development both inside and outside the classroom.
Chairman of the organising committee Daromae Aseri thanked the Western Province Sports Division, Women and Children Division and individuals who supported the event.
He also acknowledged the Premier of Western Province for recognising the importance of sports development in schools.
Aseri said the organising committee hoped to invite other schools in Gizo to participate as guest teams at the next carnival.
The event demonstrated how collaboration between schools, government and communities can create opportunities for children to participate in sports while developing their skills and interest in physical activity.

The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) has supported the Malu’u School of Excellence (MSoE) with a consignment of football equipment.
The equipment was received by Malu’u School of Excellence chairperson and goalkeeper coach Cameron Inomae on Monday this week.
Speaking on behalf of the Malu’u School of Excellence, Inomae expressed his appreciation to SIFF for the support.
He also acknowledged the SIFF Technical Team and the SIFF Youth Development Office for their continued support through the provision of equipment and training.

Inomae said the equipment would boost the school’s training programmes and its ongoing youth league competitions.
“The items will support training programmes at the School of Excellence as well as the school’s youth league competitions in the Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 age groups,” he said.
“We would also like to acknowledge the SIFF Technical Team and the SIFF Youth Development Office for their continued support through the provision of equipment and training,” he said.
He also acknowledged the Malaita Football Association (MFA) for supporting the school by endorsing its request for the equipment.
According to the Malu’u School of Excellence’s official page, the equipment arrived at the school on Wednesday October 7.
The school’s youth league is currently underway, with seven clubs from Malu’u and surrounding communities competing in a two-round format.
The Under-14 category completed its first round of competition earlier this week, while the Under-16 first-round fixtures are scheduled for this Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Under-12 league is expected to commence later this month.

Brilliant Bullets sign historic Vanuatu futsal MOUs

Solomon Islands Futsal club Brilliant Bullets FC has sealed landmark partnerships in Port Vila, signing two historic Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at boosting futsal development across the Pacific.
In an official statement from Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) released this week said, Korman Futsal Academy warmly welcomed the Honiara-based side to their development centre, highlighting the inspiring impact of the visit on local youth.

“It was a great honour for all our youth to meet and be inspired by these talented Futsal Elite players from the Solomon Islands,” it said.
The Solomon islands Brilliant Futsal club had arrived in Port Vila Vanuatu last week ahead of their friendly matches before the signing.
“Their presence created a wonderful opportunity for our young players to learn from experienced players and see what is possible through dedication and hard work.
“Moments like this are what development is all about inspiring the next generation through the game we love,” it said.
It said the initial MOU establishes a direct partnership between the Korman Sports Development Centre and Brilliant Bullets FC.
“This agreement focuses on joint player and coach development, technical knowledge sharing, exchange programs, and friendly matches,” the statement said.

It adds a second agreement, witnessed by Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) Futsal Officer, Ben Hungai, formally links UNV Futsal Club and Brilliant Bullets FC as official sister clubs.
Led by former Kurukuru World Cup veteran Jeffrey Bule alongside national squad players Calvin Doro, Ellis Mana, and Junior Mana, the Brilliant Bullets squad also conducted hands-on technical training sessions for local youth players during their visit.
Alongside the MOU signings, Brilliant Bullets FC is currently competing in a five-match friendly series against Port Vila Futsal League teams, including Southern Legion FC, UNV FC, and a Port Vila Mix Select side.

Solomon Islands National University (SINU) has officially secured an SBD $18,000 sponsorship agreement with Reeves Envico Group to support the upcoming SINU Volleyball League, set to kickoff next Thursday.
The agreement was signed in Kukum campus by SINU Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau and Reeves Envico Group representative Mrs. Dorcas Taupongi.
“In a statement today, Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau highlighted the value of sports in tertiary education, stating, “Sport is important for our health and wellbeing, but it is also about bringing people together.
“Through sport, our students develop teamwork, discipline, leadership and a sense of belonging qualities that are important not only on the volleyball court, but also in their studies, future careers and contributions to our country,” he said.
Under the terms of the sponsorship, Reeves Envico Group will provide direct financial backing for the league in exchange for brand exposure and promotional opportunities throughout the tournament.
Aqorau expressed sincere gratitude to the private sector partner, adding that such collaborations enable the university to deliver meaningful extracurricular opportunities for students beyond the classroom.
He thanked Reeves Envico Group for its investment and looking forward to a vibrant competition that fosters student engagement and health.

The Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) and the nation’s wider sporting family are in mourning following the passing of rugby union legend, Rex Te’amangu Kiloko.
In a tribute statement released this month, the SIRUF President, Board, CEO, and Staff joined players and fans across the country in extending their deepest sympathies to his family and community.
“The Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation President, Board, CEO and Staff, together with the wider rugby community, extend our heartfelt condolences to Golden and Lungu Kiloko, their families, friends, and the Renbel community on the passing of rugby veteran Rex Te’amangu Kiloko,” the federation said.
Rex Kiloko leaves behind a rich sporting legacy, having devoted decades of his life to the code as both a player and a mentor. He made a name for himself on the pitch representing local powerhouses Avaiki Rugby Club and Solomon Airlines, before earning the honour of wearing the national colours in both 7s and 15s codes.
Beyond his playing days, Kiloko remained a stalwart of the local game, passing down his knowledge and passion to the next generation as a coach and assistant coach for both the Matangiki Men’s and Avaiki Women’s Rugby Clubs.
Reflecting on his immense contribution to the sport, SIRUF highlighted his enduring impact on local rugby development.
“Rex dedicated much of his life to rugby union,” the federation noted. “His passion, commitment, and contribution to rugby will always be remembered and deeply appreciated. Solomon Islands rugby has lost one of its true, hard-core veterans.”
As the rugby fraternity and the Renbel community had laid the legend to rest, SIRUF offered final prayers for his loved ones during this time of grief.
“Rest high, brother Rex. Until that glorious morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who mourn his passing.”

Team Solomon returns from Samarkand after surpassing 2014 Olympiad benchmark

TEAM Solomon has returned home from Uzbekistan with a new national record after completing its 2026 FIDE Chess Olympiad campaign with six match points and 14.5 individual board points.
The Solomon Islands Chess Federation (SICF) confirmed the achievement following the team’s arrival in Honiara yesterday after competing in the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand.
The result represents a significant improvement on the Solomon Islands’ previous Olympiad benchmark established in Tromsø, Norway, in 2014, when the national side collected three match points and 7.5 board points.
After 12 years, the national record has now been substantially raised, with the 2026 team doubling the country’s previous match-point tally and adding seven more individual board points.
SICF said the team completed all 11 rounds of the Open competition, facing players from different chess nations during its campaign.
The federation also recorded three team victories in Samarkand, another improvement on the country’s previous Olympiad participation.
Among the individual players, Fred Resture produced the highest total for the Solomon Islands, scoring 4.5 points from 11 games on Board One.
Junior Lui followed with four points from 11 games on Board Three, while Chris Kaitu’u collected 3.5 points from his 11 games on Board Two.
Reserve player Abel Puia Sau made three appearances and contributed two points, while Melanie Chottu scored half a point from eight games.
SICF President and Head of Delegation Simon Chottu said the achievement belonged not only to the players but also to the wider group supporting chess development in the country.
“We went to Samarkand determined to compete, learn and represent our country with pride,” Chottu said.
He added that the team had returned with greater experience and confidence after establishing a new national Olympiad benchmark.
The federation also acknowledged Team Captain Ke Chen and Assistant Captain James Samu for their preparation and support throughout the tournament.
The 2026 Olympiad provided Solomon Islands players with the opportunity to compete on one of the world’s biggest chess stages, with 206 teams ultimately taking part in the Open section. FIDE’s official records confirm the event was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with 11 rounds of competition.
The new record now gives future Solomon Islands teams a higher mark to chase when the country next competes at Chess Olympiad level.
Solomon Islands’ previous Olympiad appearance was in Tromsø in 2014, where the team finished with three match points and 7.5 individual points.

THE Kolombangara Schools Mini-Sports Carnival is set to kick off next week at Kukudu Primary School, with eight schools expected to take part.
The five-day event will run from October 4 to 8 and will bring together students from schools across Kolombangara to compete in various sporting activities.
Chairman of the organising committee, Daromae Aseri, received five trophies, sports balls and other equipment from the Western Province Sports Division on Thursday ahead of the carnival.
Aseri said the participating schools are Kaza Primary, Mendina Primary, Gatere Primary, Vavanga Primary, Iriri Primary, Kukudu Primary, Santupaele Primary and Viru Primary.
He said students will compete in three age categories — junior, intermediate and senior.
“The junior category is for children aged six to nine, the intermediate category is for 10 to 11 years old, and the senior category is for children aged 12 and above,” Aseri said.
He said the senior category will feature soccer and volleyball for both boys and girls.
Aseri said track events will include the 100-metre, 200-metre and 400-metre races, while field events will include javelin, discus, shot put and long jump.
He said the carnival is being held under the theme “Together Play, Celebrate and Learn.”
Aseri said the event is intended to complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities for physical activity.
“Students must get a balance in learning and that includes indoor and physical learning to stay fit and healthy,” he said.
Aseri encouraged participating schools to bring their students and support the carnival, while acknowledging the Western Province Sports Division for its assistance.
Western Province Sports Coordinator Jim Ben said the Sports Division is pleased to support the event because it aligns with the provincial government’s policy direction on rural sports development.
He said the Alliance for Change, Alignment and Rural Economic Advancement (ACAREA) government’s policy includes supporting sports development in rural schools, communities and clubs.
Ben said support from the Sports Division depends partly on organisations being active and well organised.
“Schools, communities and clubs must be well organised and must be prepared to meet some of the costs.
“If they are active and do their part, the Sports Division will render support with its limited budget,” he said.
For the Kolombangara carnival, the Sports Division donated five trophies — an overall trophy, boys’ soccer trophy, girls’ soccer trophy, boys’ volleyball trophy and girls’ volleyball trophy.
It also provided soccer balls, volleyballs, nets, javelins and a shot put.
Ben said supporting sporting activities in rural areas is important in developing young athletes who could eventually represent Western Province at future tournaments.
He encouraged other islands in the province to organise similar sporting events for children and young people.

ST. DOMINIC Athletics Club is embracing modern technology and international partnerships to keep its growing group of athletes trained and equipped.
Club leader Stephen Rahuasi, who mentors the club’s younger athletes, is using mobile technology and digital messaging groups to manage training sessions remotely when he is away from Honiara.
Rahuasi said social media and group messaging platforms allow the squad to maintain its training momentum even when he is away from the capital.
“These days, social media reaches everywhere,” Rahuasi said. “Even though I will be away from Honiara, the athletes will continue their training. While I am not officially a full-time coach, I act as one by sending training programs into our group chat.”
In addition to remote coaching through digital platforms, the club has received technical and material support from overseas partner and coach Joyselyne.
Rahuasi acknowledged Joycelyn’s contribution, which includes guidance on training programmes and donations of essential running shoes for the club’s younger athletes.
“Coach Joycelyne has been a massive help to us, especially the senior athletes,” Rahuasi said.
“Whenever I design programs for the younger athletes, I review them with her first so she can provide valuable feedback.”
“She has also helped source running shoes from her teaching institution overseas, which I distribute to our younger athletes during training,” he added. “Her support has been invaluable.”
Access to proper footwear and professional coaching resources remains a challenge for many local athletics clubs.
For St. Dominic Athletics Club, however, international mentor networks and digital communication tools such as WhatsApp are helping provide a way to maintain regular training and support for athletes, even when key mentors are away from Honiara.

SOLOMON Islands middle-distance athlete Stephen Rahuasi is continuing his push towards the Pacific Games in Tahiti next year while balancing a demanding academic schedule.
Rahuasi produced an impressive individual performance at the National Championship, collecting three gold medals and two silver medals despite the demands of his nursing studies.
The national star confirmed he will soon travel to the provinces for a two-month practical nursing placement, but remains determined to keep his athletics preparations on track.
“Based on my results from this competition, I am still very fit,” Rahuasi said. “Even though I have been extremely busy with my studies, I managed to win three gold medals and two silver medals. Next week, I will be leaving for a two-month practical placement in another province as part of my nursing program.”
Despite temporarily relocating away from Honiara’s main training facilities, Rahuasi is confident he can adapt and maintain his fitness.
“I will continue my preparations from home while I am away,” he said. “I’ll find time to train, adapt to the new environment, and keep going. I am still actively preparing for the Pacific Games next year.”
The dual-career athlete also shared a message of encouragement for aspiring athletes, stressing the mental strength required to reach the top level in individual sports.
“To become a champion, you must think like a champion and perform like a champion,” Rahuasi said. “Nothing comes easy, especially in athletics, which is an individual sport. My advice to any young person who wants to be a champion is simple: think like a champion and live like a champion.”
Rahuasi is one of Solomon Islands’ leading athletics representatives, having competed for the country at regional and international meets, including the Commonwealth Games.
Alongside his athletics career, he is pursuing professional nursing studies, highlighting the challenge of balancing elite sport with higher education.
