The Solomon Islands Pijin Bible is being revised, with a new edition expected to be completed and printed in time for the country’s 50 th Anniversary in 2028.
Solomon Islands have had access to the Word of God in Pijin since the nation’s 30th Independence Anniversary in 2028. The Bible has been widely used in churches, homes and literacy classes across the country, a statement by SITAG yesterday said.
It has also supported Bible translators working to translate Scripture into Solomon Islands’ many local languages.
However, Pijin has changed over the past 18 years, with new words and expressions entering common use while some older terms have been less familiar.
The revision aims to ensure the Bible continues to communicate God’s Word clearly, naturally and effectively to Solomon Islands today.
The Solomon Islands Translation Advisory Group (SITAG) is leading the review. The team is checking the Scripture with younger Solomon Islands to ensure the language clear and easily to understood.
Bible translation Consultation and former SITAG Director James Ashley is overseeing the process.
The project received government support on Thursday, August 27, when Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Traditional Governance, Peace and Ecclesiastical Affairs, Lottie Vaisekavea, signed a grant agreement with SITAG Director David Barton.
The agreement provides government funding for the Pijin Bible revision.
Both officials highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Government and SITAG in supporting Bible translation and Scripture revision.
SITAG said it was honoured to serve Solomon Islanders through Bible translation, literacy and Scripture engagement.
During the ceremony, Mr Barton presented Permanent Secretary Vaisekavea with a copy of the Tikopia New Testament.
The presentation highlighted the importance of making God’s Word available in the languages spoken by Solomon Islanders.
The revised Pijin Bible is expected to help ensure Scripture remains accessible and relevant to future generations.

The proposed 43rd Second Appointed Day celebration of Malaita Province is expected to be a week long and filled with entertainment, cultural activities, business opportunities and community engagement.
The celebration will run from 11 to 18 November 2026 in Auki Town, bringing together ethnic groups, businesses, development partners, government institutions and communities to mark the province’s important annual occasion.
The tentative theme for this year’s celebration is “Creating a Prosperous Future Through Partnership and Transformative Empowerment.”
Provincial Permanent Secretary George Eric said the celebration will feature a mini-trade fair, cultural and musical festival, traditional dances, religious programmes, health and clinical services and other community activities.
He said the programme will culminate in the official 43rd Second Appointed Day inauguration on November 18.
Mr Eric described the celebration as a valuable opportunity for Malaitans to come together, showcase their culture and strengthen their collective efforts towards the development of the province.
“Let us come together in peace, unity and partnership, strengthening our collective efforts towards transformative empowerment and a better, brighter and more prosperous future for all the people of Malaita Province and our beloved country Solomon Islands,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Malaita Provincial Government said the decision to defer the Second Appointed Day celebration from its original date was made after considering the intensive road rehabilitation works currently underway in Auki.
The Malaita Provincial Government appeals to stakeholders and the people of Malaita for understanding, cooperation and continued support.
The provincial government said the deferment will also provide more time to properly prepare for a celebration that recognises Malaita’s rich heritage, culture and identity, as well as the achievements and partnerships contributing to the province’s development.
The celebration will be hosted in Auki Town, following the 42nd Second Appointed Day anniversary celebrations, which were held at ward level in 2025.

Catholic mothers from Auki Parish in Malaita are preparing for a three-day celebration of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The spiritual program commences this Friday, August 14, and to conclude Sunday, August 16.
The Catholic Church teaches that at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven.
The Feast of the Assumption is celebrated by Catholics globally to honour this belief and to reflect on the life and faith of the Virgin Mary.
For the Catholic mothers of Auki Parish, this year's celebration will be held at Auki Island.
Seven mothers' groups from Sasale, Fasitoro, Lilisiana, Auki Islands, New Kaloka, Oibola and Rade are expected to take part in the celebrations.
According to the programme, the three-day feast program will provide an opportunity for the mothers to come together, reflect on their roles and responsibilities, and renew their commitment to family and community life.
On Friday a procession carrying a statue of Mary will begin at Sasale and will be joined by women from the Fasitoro group.
The procession will then make its way to Auki Wharf, where it will continue by boat to Auki Islands, accompanied by prayers.
This will be one of the main highlights of the opening day.
The weekend event will also feature talks and presentations from health and law personnel, a chief, and Sister Doreen from the Malaita Christian Care Centre.
The celebration will continue through Sunday, August 16, bringing together Catholic mothers from the participating communities for prayer, fellowship, reflection and celebration.

Member of Parliament [MP] for Ngella, Hon. Choilyn Yim Douglas, has called for stronger legislation to protect Solomon Islands’ cultural heritage, including customary and sacred sites.
Speaking in Parliament during her reply to the Speech from the Throne, Hon. Douglas said the Government’s commitment to protecting and celebrating cultural heritage must be supported by an appropriate legal framework.
She questioned what laws would protect the country’s “living inheritance” and highlighted the particular importance of heritage sites in Ngella.
“Solomon Islands does not have a comprehensive cultural heritage law,” she said.
Hon. Douglas pointed to the country’s significant World War II heritage, including the wrecks located in and around Ngella waters, while also raising concerns about the protection of customary cultural sites.
She said the current legal framework does not provide comprehensive protection for all aspects of Solomon Islands’ cultural heritage.
Hon. Douglas also called attention to the absence of a national cultural policy, noting that the existing National Museum policy dates back to 1991 and focuses primarily on the collection and preservation of artefacts.
“A Government that commits itself to the living inheritance of our people must be prepared to write the statute under which that inheritance is protected,” she said.
She called for greater support for national cultural institutions, including the National Museum, National Archives and National Library.
Hon. Douglas said cultural development must ensure that communities retain control over how their cultural knowledge, traditions and heritage are recorded, promoted and commercially used.
“Culture must not be viewed only as a tourism product. Our languages, traditional knowledge, customary practices, sacred sites, music, dances, carving, weaving and oral histories are the living inheritance of our people,” she said.
She urged the Government to strengthen legislation and institutional support so that economic development does not come at the expense of cultural identity and community ownership.

Makira-Ulawa Province Marks 43rd Second Appointed Day
Makira-Ulawa Province today celebrates its 43rd Second Appointed Day with a programme hosted by the East Makira Constituency Host Committee at the National Museum in Honiara.
The celebrations began early this morning with Makira-Ulawa people assembling at the SMI Town Ground before a parade made its way to the National Museum.
The official programme includes the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Hon. Derick Franklyn Wasi, followed by the blessing of the provincial flag, the national and Makira-Ulawa provincial anthems, and a flag-raising ceremony by the Solomon Islands Scout Association.
The programme also featured cultural presentations, including a susugu dance by Ulawa boys, a speech on the culture of Makira-Ulawa Province, and the cutting of the 43rd Anniversary cake.
Later in the day, awareness talks were delivered by medical and RSIPF teams, covering health and crime awareness, followed by cultural entertainment and performances from Makira-Ulawa groups and Artists.
The celebrations conclude with a word of thanks and closing prayer.

Monument Plaque Reinstated at Bloody Ridge National Historical Park
Honiara, Solomon Islands - Marking the restoration of one of the Solomon Islands’ most important World War II heritage landmarks, a new monument plaque commemorating the battle of Bloody Ridge has been reinstated at Bloody Ridge National Historical Park.
The original plaque, installed when Bloody Ridge was formally declared a National Historical Park in 2017, was stolen shortly after its unveiling.
Its replacement has been funded thanks to the generosity of United States-based Valor Tours supporters, 25 of whom joined Ministry of Culture & Tourism (MCT) Permanent Secretary, Bunyan Sivoro along MCT staff, Tourism Solomons team members and the Bloody Ridge Rangers at an official unveiling ceremony marking the 64th anniversary of the Guadalcanal landings.
Expressing the Government’s deep appreciation to Valor Tours group leader Scott Freund and the many donors who contributed funds towards the new plaque, Permanent Secretary Sivoro said their efforts had restored an important landmark that holds great meaning for both Solomon Islanders and international visitors.

“The Solomon Islands holds a special place in my heart, and I always look forward to returning,” he said.
The names of all donors will be recognised at the new Bloody Ridge National Historical Park office as a lasting tribute to their generosity.
Also present, MCT Tourism Technical Advisor, Bjorn Svensson, who has played a major role in the development of the national park.
Reflecting on the long journey to establish Bloody Ridge National Historical Park, he acknowledged the challenges faced in developing and protecting the site and recognised the dedication of the Bloody Ridge Rangers.
He also highlighted future development plans aimed at strengthening the park’s role in heritage tourism and creating sustainable economic opportunities for surrounding communities.
The Valor Tours group is visiting the Solomon Islands to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the US landings on Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and the Florida Islands.

Guadalcanal Province celebrated its Second Appointed Day over the weekend with a vibrant showcase of culture, unity, and national solidarity.
A major highlight of the celebrations was the inaugural Provincial Feast, which brought together representatives from all nine provinces of Solomon Islands. 3 August 2026 - The 42nd Guadalcanal Province Second Appointed Day celebrations came to a successful close on Monday with a colourful ceremony at the National Stadium in Honiara, concluding four days of cultural festivities, community engagement, and development-focused activities.
Thousands of people from Guadalcanal Province and across the Solomon Islands gathered throughout the celebrations to honour the province's achievements, rich cultural heritage, and contribution to national development.
The four-day programme featured traditional dances, cultural performances, exhibitions, community outreach programmes, sporting events, and entertainment, highlighting the diversity and unity of Guadalcanal's people.
A major highlight of the closing ceremony was the presentation of the traditional Chupu by the people of Guadalcanal to national and provincial leaders.
The cultural gesture symbolised respect, appreciation, and the strong relationship between Guadalcanal and the nation.
The celebrations concluded with a grand feast, where all Guadalcanal constituencies came together to provide food and hospitality for guests and representatives from every province in the Solomon Islands, demonstrating the province's tradition of unity and generosity.
Provincial leaders used the occasion to acknowledge Guadalcanal's continued contribution to national development and encouraged citizens to strengthen peace, unity, and cooperation as the province continues its development journey.
Organisers thanked participants, sponsors, performers, volunteers, government agencies, security personnel, and supporters for their commitment in making the 42nd Second Appointed Day celebrations a memorable and successful event.
Held under the theme, "Empowering Guadalcanal for National Unity and Prosperity," this year's celebration ended with renewed optimism and pride in Guadalcanal's cultural identity and its vision for a prosperous future.

Guadalcanal Province's rich cultural heritage was on full display on Friday as the 42nd Second Appointed Day Celebrations officially opened at SINU Village and the National Stadium.
Following the official launch under the theme "Empowering Guadalcanal for National Unity and Prosperity," the celebration grounds came alive with traditional music, dances, and cultural performances from communities across the province.
Participants proudly wore traditional attire decorated with shells, woven ornaments, and leaves, reflecting the unique customs and identities of their respective regions. Guadalcanal Province Launches 42nd Second Appointed Day Celebrations.
The Guadalcanal Provincial Government today - Friday 31st July officially launched its 42nd Second Appointed Day Celebrations under the theme, "Empowering Guadalcanal for National Unity and Prosperity," bringing together communities from across the province for four days of cultural pride, leadership dialogue, and entertainment.
The celebrations, running from 31 July to 3 August, are being hosted at SINU Village and the National Stadium in Honiara.
The opening day began with colourful float parades from both eastern and western Guadalcanal, with participants representing constituencies, wards, schools, churches, youth groups, and private companies converging at SINU Village.
The official opening ceremony featured a devotion led by Rev. Eric Maefonea of the SSEC Church, followed by the raising of the national and provincial flags and the singing of the anthems by students from Lunga Community High School.
Chairman of the Second Appointed Day Committee, Mr. Maesac Suia, delivered the welcome address, while Deputy Premier Hon. John Lee Saki addressed participants on behalf of the Guadalcanal Provincial Government.
The Guest of Honour, Honiara City Lord Mayor Cr.
Eddie Siapu, also delivered keynote remarks, highlighting the importance of unity and cooperation between Guadalcanal communities and the capital city.
The ceremony concluded with closing remarks by Ms. Ethel Frances, Vice Chairlady of the organising committee.
Following the official programme, guests and participants enjoyed refreshments before the commencement of cultural performances and unity exhibitions coordinated by the province's Tourism Department.
Throughout the afternoon and evening, traditional dances and live band performances showcased Guadalcanal's rich cultural heritage, with the first day concluding with string band entertainment.
The second day's programme will focus on leadership, featuring reflections from political, church, and community leaders, as well as a panel discussion on "Guadalcanal Province Challenges and Future Perspectives."
The discussion will feature prominent speakers including Sir Waeta Ben Tabusasi, Philip Kapini, Dr. Derek Sikua, Dr. Chris Vehe, Dr. Patricia Rodie, Dr. Lincy Pedeverana, and Hon. Dr. Paul Bosawai, who will examine issues such as provincial development, mining, women's leadership, entrepreneurship, and Guadalcanal's aspirations for statehood.
Cultural performances, youth and women's leadership sessions, and live entertainment will continue throughout the celebrations, highlighting the diversity, resilience, and unity of Guadalcanal Province.

GP Second Appointed Day Celebration Starts with Float Parade
Day one celebration to mark 42nd Guadalcanal Second Appointed gets off this morning with a float parade.
The early morning float parade commenced around 6am and concluded at SINU Village.
The Official Opening Ceremony gets underway at 9am featuring speeches from the Deputy Premier and our Guest of Honour, Lord Mayor Cr. Eddie Siapu.
Early this morning the participants groups departed from two designated starting points.
The Northwest Guadalcanal, West Guadalcanal, and South Guadalcanal Constituencies began their float parade from Mamara, while the Central Guadalcanal, North Guadalcanal, Northeast Guadalcanal, East Central Guadalcanal, and East Guadalcanal Constituencies started from Foxwood.
Both float convoys ended up at the SINU Village, for the official opening ceremony.
Honiara city came to a stand still as the convey from Mamara passed through the city from White River all the way to Panatina, East Honiara for the official opening.
The program continues until Monday.

Guadalcanal Province is set to host its 42nd Second Appointed Day celebrations starting tomorrow at the SINU Village.
The event will begin with a parade tomorrow and continue throughout the weekend until Monday, when the official program will be held at the National Stadium.
A highlight of the celebrations is the provincial feast, where all constituencies within Guadalcanal will provide food for the other eight provinces, as allocated by the organizers.
