The Malaita Provincial Government, through the Malaita Economic Cooperation and Transformative Government (MECTG) led by Premier Elijah Asilau’a, has reaffirmed its support for the GREAT Government policy.
Premier Asilau’a said the cooperation and shared vision between the provincial and national governments will help improve and strengthen service delivery for the people of Malaita Province.
He made the statement during the opening of a two-week induction and capacity-building training for Members of the Provincial Assembly, Executive members, Administration and Technical Officers at the Provincial Chambers, Green House, this afternoon.
“I believe this capacity-building programme is an important part of implementing the GREAT Coalition Policy of the Malaita Provincial Government,” he said.
He said the training will provide an opportunity for participants to strengthen their understanding of government systems, laws, responsibilities and procedures that guide provincial government operations.
“One of our key objectives is to work closely with the Ministry of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening to improve institutional capacity and strengthen the effective delivery of services to our people,” he said.
The training will cover key areas including financial management ordinances and financial instructions, revenue mobilisation, government processes and procedures, the Provincial Government Act 1997, participatory planning, public expenditure, audit issues and Standing Orders.
Premier Asilau’a said strengthening the capacity of provincial leaders and officials is essential to ensure effective governance, accountability and better service delivery.
The capacity-building programme is intended to be rolled out to all provinces in the country.

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the Tina River Hydropower Development Project has officially been named Rotima, following a naming competition involving students from schools in the project area.
The name was selected during an award ceremony held in Honiara on Friday 14th of August, with the project team describing the name as a reflection of local culture, community pride and shared hopes for the future.
Project Manager Pradip Verma says the TBM will play an important role in constructing the project’s 3.2-kilometre headrace tunnel.
The tunnel, measuring 3.8 metres in diameter, will carry water from the dam to the powerhouse, where the water will be used to generate electricity.
The Tina River Hydropower Project is a 15-megawatt development consisting of three five-megawatt generating units.
Verma says the project is expected to generate about 78 gigawatt hours of electricity each year and supply around 65 percent of Honiara’s energy requirements when it is commissioned in February 2028.
“This project will definitely be a gamechanger for Solomon Islands,” Verma said.
The project is also expected to reduce Solomon Power’s reliance on diesel-generated electricity and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Pradip said the project is expected to displace about 38,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas each year and reduce diesel consumption.
The project is also delivering benefits to communities in the project area through the Community Benefit Sharing Project.
Under the first phase, 187 homes were connected to electricity, while another 287 homes are being connected under the second phase.
The project is also supporting water supply systems, literacy and numeracy training, business training and agricultural activities.
Pradip added that around 200 local people are currently working on the project, with further opportunities expected as construction progresses.
Women in surrounding communities are also supplying food and vegetables to the project camp. With the number of people at the camp expected to increase as major construction activities progress, the supply quantity will increase.
The project has currently achieved 35 percent progress.
Verma acknowledged communities in the Bahomea, Malango, Malatoha and Belaha areas for their support, saying their cooperation has been important to the progress of the project.
Tina Hydropower Limited is expected to operate the project for 30 years after commercial operation.
With the TBM now officially named Rotima, the machine will form an important part of the next stage of tunnel construction for the Tina River Hydropower Project.
The tunnel boring is expected to commence in early November this year.

Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Wale has called on Solomon Islands’ development partners to better align their support with national priorities and help deliver tangible results for the people.
Speaking at the opening of the Solomon Islands Development Partnership Summit 2026 at Heritage Park Hotel today, Prime Minister Wale said stronger cooperation between Government and development partners was essential to achieving the country’s development goals.
He acknowledged the significant contribution of development partners, noting that between 2016 and 2021, they contributed SBD$8.8 billion of the SBD$13.6 billion mobilised for development.
Prime Minister Wale said the GREAT Coalition Government’s reform agenda is focused on strengthening institutions, restoring trust, upholding the rule of law and ensuring the Government serves the people.
“We are rebuilding trust between Government and our people, and between Government and our development partners, anchored in openness, mutual respect, transparency and accountability,” he said.
He said the Government’s priorities include Free Education, affordable electricity, stronger institutions, responsible decentralisation and people-centred development.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the need to transform and diversify the economy by strengthening agriculture, fisheries, forestry, tourism, mining, energy, commerce and small and medium enterprises, while building the country’s manufacturing base.
“We are resolved to transform this economy and widen the horizon of opportunity for every Solomon Islander,” he said.
Prime Minister Wale urged development partners to support coordinated national programmes, increase the use of local content and national systems, and ensure development investments create greater benefits for Solomon Islanders and local businesses.
“Let this Summit mark the passage from dialogue to action, from commitments to implementation, and from scattered individual projects to a coordinated national development effort,” he said.
With Solomon Islands set to graduate from Least Developed Country status in December 2027, the Prime Minister also called for continued support during the transition towards greater self-reliance.
He said the Development Partnership Summit will become an annual event, with the next Summit expected in 2027.
Prime Minister Wale thanked the United Nations, UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Dirk Wagener, and the Government of New Zealand, through High Commissioner His Excellency Jonathan Curr, for supporting and financing the Summit.

World Bank Highlights Opportunities for Solomon Islands' Economic Recovery EffortBy John ChrismaSolomon Star, HoniaraSolomon Islands has an opportunity to transform its economic recovery into more jobs, higher incomes and greater resilience to future shocks, according to the World Bank Group’s first-ever Solomon Islands Economic Update.The report, titled “Harnessing the New Roots of Growth,” identifies stronger public financial management, greater investment in agriculture and fisheries, and new sources of economic growth beyond mining as critical to achieving more inclusive and sustainable development.The Economic Update shows that Solomon Islands’ economy has rebounded after contracting for three consecutive years between 2020 and 2022. However, the recovery remains narrow and is largely driven by mining, remittances and public infrastructure spending.According to the World Bank, these sources of growth have generated limited employment, delivered uneven benefits across communities and left the economy exposed to future shocks.“Solomon Islands is at an important turning point,” said Bernard Harborne, World Bank Group Resident Representative for Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.“The country is benefiting from new sources of growth, particularly mining, but long-term prosperity will depend on how effectively resource revenues are managed and invested. Stronger public finances and greater investment in productive sectors can help create jobs, support local businesses, and improve living standards across the country.”The report projects the Solomon Islands economy will grow by 2.8 percent in 2026, driven mainly by gold mining and public investment.Gold accounted for more than half of the country’s exports in 2025, compared with just four percent in 2019. However, the World Bank cautions that while mining can generate significant export earnings, it requires substantial investment and creates relatively few jobs.The report further highlighted that stronger governance and careful reinvestment of resource revenues will be essential to ensure that the benefits of mining reach communities and the wider economy.Youth employment remains a major challenge, the report noted.The need to create employment opportunities for young Solomon Islanders is particularly urgent.The report estimates that around 9,000 young Solomon Islanders enter the labour force every year, while only about 2,100 formal jobs are created annually.This significant gap highlights the need for the country to develop sectors capable of generating more employment and income opportunities outside the extractive industries.The World Bank also warns that fiscal pressures are mounting.Cash reserves currently cover less than one month of government spending, while public debt reached 30 percent of GDP in 2025.Declining grants, higher fuel costs and climate-related disasters are placing additional pressure on government finances. CAUSE II Improves Auki Access, Promotes CleanlinessBy SOLOMON LOFANASolomon Star, AukiMalaita Provincial capital of Auki is undergoing transformation thanks to the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement II (CAUSE II) Project.According to the latest Auki CAUSE II project update, eight community groups around the provincial capital are currently engaged in street-cleaning activities.As a result, it helps to keep the town clean while new pedestrian infrastructure is under construction.The groups are carrying out cleaning at locations including Townend Mobile Street and the Burinasia area towards Osi Lake, helping to promote the cleanliness and facelift the township’s outlook.The update stated that CAUSE II’s community-based waste cleaning and collection activities, under Component 2 – Safe and Inclusive Communities, are aimed at supporting cleaner, safer and more inclusive urban environments while also providing short-term employment opportunities for local community members.It said the Auki Project Implementation Unit (PIU) is continuing to liaise with the Auki Town Council [ATC] regarding the disposal of collected waste and the identification of an appropriate dumping site.Meanwhile, construction of a 200-metre footpath at Bitakaula School is scheduled to begin next week.The footpath will later be complemented by solar-powered lighting, providing safer and more accessible movement for students and the wider community.Footpaths and solar-powered lighting are part of CAUSE II’s Component 2 activities, which are designed to improve community access, safety and resilience.The ongoing works are another step in CAUSE II’s efforts to support safer, cleaner and more accessible urban communities in Auki and across Solomon Islands.//End//

BY JOSES SARENWork on modernising land surveying and mapping in Honiara has taken on another level with Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey (MLHS) Surveyor General’s Division reviewing the accuracy of property boundaries and testing a prototype digital land information system.A statement from CAUSE II Project this morning said a workshop on this was held yesterday and hosted by Surveyor General Leslie Volalia for 10 staff from the Survey Section and the National Geographic Information Centre (NGIC).One of the highlights from discussions was on work carried out earlier this year to bring older survey information into modern coordinate systems.The statement said MLHS surveyors used GPS to determine the mathematical parameters needed to convert survey coordinates from a pre-independence system into the modern coordinate systems used by GPS and digital mapping platforms such as Google Earth.The workshop reviewed how this work can be finalised and extended beyond Honiara to other parts of the country.A key outcome was the confirmation that Honiara’s property-boundary coordinates are now in good shape for integration into the proposed Integrated Land Information System (ILIS).“The proposed ILIS is intended to provide a shared digital platform for land information, with the system expected to support MLHS, Honiara City Council (HCC) and Guadalcanal Provincial Government (GPG),” the statement said.As part of the workshop, surveyors and mapping staff were given a hands-on opportunity to review a prototype system built on SOLA (Solutions for Land Administration), an open-source land administration platform developed with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).This exercise allowed staff to look at how well SOLA could meet Solomon Islands’ survey and mapping needs and how it can help streamline processes within the Surveyor General’s Division.The statement added that the proposed system could also make digital information on property boundaries and ownership more accessible to government agencies and, over time, the general public.Neil Pullar, Land Administration Consultant with the CAUSE II Project, said getting the survey foundations right is what makes everything else possible.“Once Honiara’s property boundaries line up with GPS and Google Earth, we can bring boundaries and ownership together in one trusted system that MLHS, the city and the province can all rely on – and that the public can access,” he said.The CAUSE II Project said feedback from the Division’s surveyors and mapping staff will help shape how the tools are finalised and eventually rolled out across the country.The CAUSE II Project is implemented by the Solomon Islands Government and supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.Photo credit: CAUSE II ProjectFor feedback, contact: josessaren@gmail.comEditor: irwin3angiki@gmail.com

MINISTRIES URGED TO UPHOLD THE PFM ACTBy LEILANI OSOSolomon Star, HoniaraTHE Finance and Treasury Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has called on all Permanent Secretaries, and all Financial Controllers, Human Resources Managers in Government Ministries to uphold the Public Financial Management [PFM] Act (2013).The Minister also urged the holders of these positions to work together to manage all priority activities and programmes in the 2026 Budget within the secured financial resources, and demonstrate discipline during the budget execution.Lilo made the calls when presenting the 2026 Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2026 in Parliament on Thursday 13 August.The Government, through the 2026 Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2026, sought Parliament’s authourisation of additional expenditure of $758,411,407.09 to the 2026 Appropriation Act 2025 for government services up until the end of this year.This includes $10,000,000 in Contingency Warrants, $316,404,082.81 in Advance Warrants and additional expenditures of $432,007,324.28, which comprise $197,657,324.28 recurrent expenditures, $159,350,000.00 development expenditures and 75,000,000.00 budget support.Lilo said the additional supplementary expenditures were considered in accordance with section 102(3) of the Constitution and section 51 of the PFM Act 2013.He said it was found that the sum appropriated by the 2026 Appropriation Act 2025 for any purpose was insufficient and a need has arisen for expenditure for a purpose for which no sum has been appropriated. The Finance and Treasury Minister said the government remains committed to monitor the implementation of the 2026 budget, ensure funds are available to meet its contractual commitments and outstanding mandatory obligations to ensure government essential services continued to be delivered to our people without disruptions. “Sir, the Ministry of Finance and Treasury will continue to support ministries and closely monitor all expenditures and ensure they are spent wisely, responsibly and to protect the economic and social wellbeing of our people. “I therefore call on all responsible Permanent Secretaries, Financial Controllers, Human Resources Managers and Directors to uphold the PFM Act (2013) and work together to manage all priority activities and programs within the secured financial resources, and demonstrate discipline during execution of the Budget.” The Supplementary Bill passed through the Committee and Third Reading Stages on Friday 14 August.//End//

BY JOHN HOUANIHAUThe Solomon Islands Government delegation to Timor-Leste is expected to gain practical lessons on sovereign wealth management, natural resource governance and institutional capacity as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s economic resilience.The visit follows Cabinet’s endorsement of the peer-learning mission, supported through the g7+ initiative, which promotes the sharing of practical experiences among member states.Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET), Permanent Secretary George Hoa’au, said this during a press conference on Friday last week.Mr Hoa’au said the main objective of this week’s visit is to learn how Timor-Leste established and managed its Petroleum Fund following independence in 2002.He said the mission represents an important opportunity for Solomon Islands to learn directly from Timor-Leste’s experience and consider lessons that could be adapted to the country’s own circumstances.Mr Hoa’au said the mission demonstrates the importance of peer learning in helping countries build resilience by sharing experiences and adapting approaches that have worked in similar contexts.He said lessons from Timor-Leste and other international partners will also contribute to Solomon Islands’ broader institutional reforms, including the proposed Foreign Service Bill and a policy white paper that aims to assess the country’s foreign service presence and future-proofing a foreign service that is “small but smart and sovereign.”He said Solomon Islands must be prepared to “learn, unlearn and relearn quickly” as regional and international conditions continue to change.Meanwhile, g7+ Secretary-General (SG) Dr. Hélder da Costa said he had consulted with the Ministers of Finance and Minning in Solomon Islands and their respective counterparts in Timor-Leste.He said Timor-Leste’s Minister of Finance and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources are prepared to host their Solomon Islands counterparts during the visit.“One of the key areas of interest will be Timor-Leste’s Petroleum Fund, which stood at about US.3 billion at the end of 2024, according to the country’s Ministry of Finance. The fund is managed under a legal and institutional framework that includes the Estimated Sustainable Income mechanism and oversight of government withdrawals.“The delegation is expected to examine not only the size of the fund, but also how it is governed, invested, protected and integrated into the national budget process, lessons that could be particularly relevant as Solomon Islands considers how best to manage future revenues from its own natural resources,” g7+ SG Dr. Hélder da Costa said.He said the visit will also strengthen cooperation in natural resource management.“The Minister of Mining and Rural Electrification is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with his Timor-Leste counterpart. New Aviation Complex Advances To The EndThe new Aviation Complex Building (ACB) Project at Honiara International Airport has advanced significantly towards completion, with overall physical progress reaching 90 percent. The project is scheduled for completion on 31 August 2026. The ACB is being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with financial support from the World Bank. The construction works are being undertaken by China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG), while Egis Asia is providing construction supervision services.The ACB is a major investment in Solomon Islands’ aviation infrastructure. Once completed, it will provide modern and improved working facilities for key aviation stakeholders, supporting more efficient and effective aviation operations at Honiara International Airport.As the ACB moves into its final stages, CRCEG is continuing to complete the remaining mechanical, electrical, plumbing and external works. These activities are being undertaken alongside testing and commissioning, inspections, quality assurance and the rectification of identified outstanding items.Current activities include completing internal and external finishes, finalising building services and external facilities, testing electrical and mechanical systems, conducting inspections and addressing identified defects. The team is also undertaking systematic quality assurance checks to ensure that completed works meet the required technical, safety and quality standards prior to handover.Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, said, “We are pleased with the significant progress achieved on the Aviation Complex Building. Reaching 90 percent physical completion demonstrates that the project has entered its final phase. “However, there is still important work to be completed, particularly testing and commissioning, inspections and the rectification of outstanding items before the facility can be handed over.” In addition to the new Aviation Complex Building in Honiara, SIRAP2 is delivering a wide range of critical transport investments across the country. These include ongoing construction of the Air Traffic Control Towers in Honiara and Munda, the upgrades of Suavanao Airfield in Isabel Province, investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, ongoing maintenance of regional airports, rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of East Road between Baratolo and Atori, sealing of 12 kilometres of North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction and replacement of Fiu River Bridge in Malaita.- SIRAP2//End//
BY BEN BILUAGizoTHE Government has allocated .4 million, representing 45 percent of its budget, towards economic transformation, inclusive economic development, job creation, tourism and fisheries investment.Minister of Finance Gordon Darcy Lilo said the allocation forms part of the Government’s commitment under the Great Coalition Government to create greater economic opportunities and promote sustainable growth.He said the Government will support farmers to increase cocoa production as part of efforts to strengthen the rural economy.Lilo said rural economic and social development remains a priority, with .3 million, or 28 percent of the budget, allocated towards the resource sector.He said the investment aims to support key productive sectors and ensure that economic development reaches rural communities.Lilo stated that the Government has also approved .7 million in credit and grant funding from development partners for key infrastructure development.He said the funding includes support for implementation of the Community Access and Urban Security Enhancement Project under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development.“It includes additional funding for road maintenance in Honiara, Malaita and Western Province, as well as office maintenance and the purchase of machinery, structures and fencing under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development,” Lilo said.On national security, public safety, education, health and social cohesion, he said the Government has allocated .7 million, representing 19 percent of the budget, towards the social sector.Lilo said donor support will also assist with the implementation of asset maintenance and housing construction projects.“Additional funding has been provided to maintain mandatory and operational services under the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force and the Correctional Services Commission,” he said.In the education sector, Lilo said the Government will support the rehabilitation of school infrastructure, increase funding for scholarships and school grants, and meet administrative costs associated with initial consultations on the Government’s free education policy in preparation for 2027.He said the allocations reflect the fundamental pillars of the Great Coalition Government, including economic opportunity and sustainable growth, national security and public safety, education, health and human capital development, social cohesion, culture and community wellbeing, and infrastructure and national development.Lilo said the Government’s investment priorities are designed to support economic growth while improving essential services and development opportunities for Solomon Islanders.Photo credit: NPSIFor feedback, contact: maetuana777@gmail.comEditor: irwin3angiki@gmail.com

HONIARA, Solomon Islands – The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) partners with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration to profile local MSME and women lead businesses at the upcoming Inaugural PNG Solomon Islands Business Investment Conference to be held on the 19 and 20 August, at Heritage Park Hotel.
A landmark event between the two Melanesian countries who have shared similar culture, challenges and vision to grow and strengthen its economy through private sector development.
Under a shared vision, MCILI and SICCI look to support grow the local MSME sector of Solomon Islands, through building business capacities, networking, engagement and connecting to the market.
MCILI Director of Marketing, Ms. Donalee Vozoto, emphasized the GREAT Government’s priority to enable MSMEs to participate meaningfully in business, expand domestic value addition, and access practical markets.
“MSME businesses are the backbone of our country. Supporting them means we are nurturing them to become the leading employers of the future. Solomon Islands side beats AS Tiga Sport 2-0 to set up semi-final clash with Galaxy FC

CENTRAL Coast FC have booked their place in the semi-finals of the OFC Men’s Champions League 2026 after defeating AS Tiga Sport 2-0 in a crucial group-stage match.
The Solomon Islands champions produced a disciplined performance to eliminate the New Caledonian side and set up a semi-final meeting with Group B winners Galaxy FC of Vanuatu.
Central Coast needed only a draw to progress, while AS Tiga had to win to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
The Solomon Islands side started strongly and created several chances inside the opening 10 minutes but failed to find the breakthrough.
That changed in the 15th minute when captain Javin Wae stepped up for a free-kick and curled a low effort into the bottom-right corner to put Central Coast ahead.
The goal settled Central Coast, with Bobby Leslie and Rafa Lea’i continuing to cause problems for the AS Tiga defence with their movement and combination play.
AS Tiga searched for an equaliser but struggled to test Central Coast goalkeeper Erick Wanega.
The New Caledonian side made four substitutions early in the second half as coach Leo Lopez looked for an attacking spark.
Knowing they needed at least two goals, AS Tiga pushed more players forward, leaving spaces for Central Coast to exploit.
Lea’i came close to doubling the lead after racing onto a pass from Leslie, but AS Tiga goalkeeper Thomas Schmidt produced an outstanding save to keep his side in the contest.
Central Coast eventually sealed the victory in the 72nd minute.
Lea’i delivered a dangerous corner towards the back post, where Marlon Tahioa rose highest and headed the ball down into the bottom-left corner to make it 2-0.
The victory sends Central Coast back into the OFC Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2022.
They will now face Galaxy FC of Vanuatu for a place in the final, while AS Tiga Sport’s campaign ends at the group stage.

THE Government has allocated SBD75 million towards recovery and rehabilitation efforts following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Maila.
Minister of Finance Gordon Darcy Lilo made the announcement during the second reading of the 2025 Appropriation Bill in Parliament last week.
Lilo said the SBD75 million allocation will support recovery and rehabilitation services through to 31 December 2026.
“I will not go through the details of the bill, but the details can be viewed in the bill itself,” he said.
Lilo said the allocation reflects the Government’s commitment to ensure budget and donor-funded projects, including credit and grant assistance, are appropriately coordinated to support the recovery effort.
He said the funds will be administered through the National Disaster Council and the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).
Lilo also warned political leaders against politicising the funding, stressing that the appropriate authorities should be allowed to administer and deliver recovery programmes and activities to cyclone-affected communities.
“Let the rightful authorities administer and deliver much needed programs and activities that will support communities that were affected by Cyclone Maila,” he said.
The announcement comes as a relief to many communities in Western and Choiseul provinces, which have expressed growing frustration over the pace of recovery and rehabilitation efforts following the cyclone.
Communities have been waiting for assistance to rebuild homes, restore livelihoods and repair essential infrastructure damaged by Maila.
For months, affected communities have questioned when substantial recovery assistance will reach them.
Lilo, however, said assistance was coming and urged communities to remain patient while the Government puts the necessary arrangements in place.
He said funds needed to be properly administered before being dispersed for recovery and rehabilitation programmes.
The SBD75 million allocation now provides a dedicated financial commitment towards addressing the needs of communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila as the Government moves into the recovery phase.

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) has issued Heavy Rain Warning Number Eight cautioning that a heavy rain warning remains current for Temotu Province.
The warning was issued at 7:00pm yesterday evening, Sunday 16th August 2026.
According to the Meteorological Service, a trough lies northeast of the Solomon Islands, while a general southeast trade wind flow continues to persist over the country. The associated cloud and heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, are expected to affect Temotu Province.
SIMS warns that such localised heavy rain may trigger landslides and flash flooding, particularly over communities living near hill slopes, and close to large rivers, streams and low-lying areas.
Sea travellers have been urged to take safety precautions, as heavy rain can significantly reduce visibility.
The public is strongly advised to take necessary safety measures to avoid danger and loss of lives, and residents are encouraged to share this information with people living with disabilities.
