Solomon Islands, Australia Advance RSIPF Expansion Partnership
The Solomon Islands Government and the Australian Government have taken another major step in strengthening policing capability, advancing key projects under the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Expansion Partnership.
Over the past month, Minister for Police, National Security and Correctional Services Hon. John Tuhaika Jr and Australian High Commissioner Jeff Roach signed the foundational Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the construction of a new RSIPF Academy. Officials from both countries have also agreed on the academy's building design and progressed plans for a package of policing infrastructure upgrades across all nine provinces.
Speaking at the MOU signing, Minister Tuhaika described the new Police Academy as a strategic investment in the country's future.
> "The new Police Academy is a strategic investment in Solomon Islands' future generations and will promote improved professional standards, institutional excellence, governance and systems in the RSIPF," he said.
He added that the academy and provincial policing projects are long-term investments that will strengthen policing services for generations to come.
Australian High Commissioner Jeff Roach thanked Minister Tuhaika for his leadership and reaffirmed Australia's commitment to supporting the RSIPF through a multi-year partnership.
"The RSIPF Expansion Partnership is built on decades of uniformed and non-uniformed engagement between Australia and Solomon Islands," Mr Roach said.
He said it was encouraging to see many of the partnership's key initiatives now taking shape, adding that the MOU represented another milestone in Solomon Islands' efforts to strengthen its sovereign policing capability while contributing to regional security across the Pacific.
The new Police Academy, the flagship project of the RSIPF Expansion Partnership, will be built at the Rove Police Headquarters Precinct on a site selected by the Solomon Islands Government in February 2026.
The partnership supports Solomon Islands' vision of developing a strong, self-reliant and enduring policing capability while improving police performance and service delivery to communities nationwide.
It also reflects the shared commitment of Solomon Islands and Australia to promoting a secure and prosperous Blue Pacific by combining Australian investment with the expertise of officials from both countries to deliver lasting improvements in policing infrastructure and capability.

Fr Maelanga Calls for Urgent Action
to Restore Order in Honiara

Minister for Home Affairs Fr Manasseh Maelanga raised concerns about lack of discipline and respect with in Honiara city which continues to deteriorate.
Speaking in Parliament this week, the East Malaita Member of Parliament [MP] said; "There is also a growing perception that order and discipline within the city are weakening."
He went on to highlight the disturbance from drunkards and those playing loud music in the communities.
“The unchecked use of loud music and other forms of public disturbance demonstrates the need for stronger enforcement of municipal by-laws and greater respect for the rights of others."
He further stressed that alcohol abuse has become "a significant contributor to anti-social behaviour, domestic violence, disorderly conduct and public disturbances."
Fr Maelanga further stated that petty theft and other minor crimes are also increasing.
"Closely associated with this is the rise in petty theft and other minor criminal activities that affect ordinary citizens, businesses and visitors alike.
“These offences erode public confidence, discourage investment, and create a climate of insecurity that is inconsistent with the aspirations of a modern capital city."
Fr Maelanga said these issues are linked to wider challenges facing the city.
"They are symptoms of broader challenges associated with rapid urbanisation, population growth, unemployment, inadequate urban planning, limited housing, and increasing pressure on municipal services."
He said addressing these problems requires a coordinated national response involving the Honiara City Council, the Guadalcanal Provincial Government, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), relevant government ministries, traditional leaders, churches, communities and the private sector."
Fr Maelanga welcomed the Government's commitment to review the Honiara City Act, strengthen the city's governance, improve financial management, enhance waste management in partnership with Guadalcanal Province and extend essential services to informal settlements.
"These reforms provide an important opportunity to modernise the governance of our capital and establish a framework that is responsive to current realities and future growth," he said.
Describing Honiara as the political, administrative, commercial and diplomatic centre of Solomon Islands, Maelanga said everyone has a responsibility to ensure the city is "clean, safe, orderly, resilient and well-managed."
He said transforming Honiara will require strong leadership and effective partnerships.
"The transformation of Honiara City will therefore require bold leadership, hard decisions and effective partnerships.
“If we are to build a capital city worthy of our nation's future, we must act decisively today to restore order, improve infrastructure, strengthen public services and create a city that every Solomon Islander can be proud to call their capital."
Fr Maelanga said the Honiara City Council and Guadalcanal Provincial Government must work closely together to improve financial management, municipal administration, waste management and the delivery of essential public services.
The Minister added that enforcement agencies also need greater support in maintaining law and order in the capital.
"We must double our efforts to ensure we protect our people from all sorts of harm. I believe, we will need to enhance our support to our enforcement at the Honiara City level. We must support them so that they enforce public law and order within the City."
The former Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the reforms recognise that effective governance of Honiara is a national priority and reaffirmed that the Ministry of Home Affairs stands ready to embark into these national undertakings.

Police have arrested lifetime murder convict and prison escapee, Hency Bosalia, who had been unlawfully at large since escaping custody on November 2, 2023.
Following his escape, police conducted multiple operations to finally locate and apprehend him, a police statement on Tuesday said.
Despite extensive efforts over an extended period, the breakthrough came through effective intelligence gathering, careful operational planning, strong inter-departmental cooperation, and disciplined execution.
These combined efforts led to his arrest on July 20, 2026, police said.
Following his arrest, Bosalia has returned to lawful custody and will continue serving his life sentence at the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) facility at Rove, Honiara, the statement said.
RSIPF acknowledges the dedication and professionalism of all officers and community members involved in the operation, whose commitment ensured the successful apprehension of the escapee and reinforced public confidence in law enforcement.

THE Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Brass Band rocked the crowd at the National Stadium in Honiara during Guadalcanal Province’s 42nd Appointed Day celebration on Monday, August 3.
The band performed after the official parade, showcasing dance patterns, brass instruments and beats, thrilling the audience with a variety of melodies, a statement by police on Tuesday this week said.
The energetic performance captivated crowds and dignitaries alike, giving them a sense of pride and unity.
The Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI), RSIPF, Honiara City Council Law Enforcement, and other participating groups also took part in the celebration with a colourful parade.
RSIPF and CSSI marked the anniversary with a march past that drew cheers from the crowd.
Families and friends came together to enjoy the celebration, with laughter and music filling the air throughout the event.
The vibrant atmosphere reflected the spirit of unity and pride shared among the crowd and dignitaries.

HNA POSTPONES ROUND 8 FIXTURES

The Honiara Netball Association (HNA) has postponed all Round 8 fixtures after persistent rainfall left the Multipurpose Outdoor Courts unsafe for play.
HNA confirmed the decision to Star Sport Wednesday, saying all matches originally scheduled for Saturday, August 1, and Monday, August 3, have been postponed until a later date due to the wet court conditions.
The association said player and officials' safety remains its top priority, prompting the decision to defer the entire round rather than risk injuries on the slippery courts.
HNA added that new dates for the postponed Round 8 fixtures will be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, despite the postponement of Round 8, the competition will resume this weekend with Round 9 fixtures.
Matches from the Super, A, B and C Divisions will be played across two courts on Saturday before continuing on Monday and Wednesday next week.
The association has encouraged all participating clubs, players and supporters to stay updated through its official communication channels for any further fixture announcements.

Lucas mill theft

A man charged for stealing a Lucas Mill in Isabel Province early this year will be entering his plea to the allegation on August 10.
John Laulae Fenehia, also known as John Neiko, has been charged with simple larceny.
This was over the alleged theft of a Lucas Mill belonging to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Marovo Constituency in Western Province, Chachabule Rebi Amoi.
The matter came before the Honiara Magistrates’ Court this week and was adjourned to August 10, 2026, for plea.
The charge alleges that between January 1 and February 25, 2026, at Litogahira, Katova District, Isabel Province, Fenehia stole one Lucas Mill belonging to MP Amoi.
When the matter came before the court, the presiding Magistrate adjourned the case and directed defence counsel to prepare the defendant for plea at the next mention.
Fenehia is represented by Ruth Wairepo of the Public Solicitor’s Office.
The allegation relates to claims that the Lucas Mill was removed from a camp in Isabel without the owner's consent and was later sold.
Fenehia was arrested in Honiara on February 28 and interviewed by police on March 1 in relation to the allegations.
Police also allege that the Lucas Mill was later recovered and returned to its owner in Lunga.
Some parts of the machine, including stands and extensions, were reportedly still outstanding at the time of recovery.
The case has been adjourned to August 10 for plea.
Police Prosecutor Barret Raoga appears for the State.

Konofilia’s case adjourned
to Aug 11 over appeal

The sentencing submissions and mitigation for Moffat Konofilia have been further adjourned as lawyers consider whether proceedings in the Honiara Magistrate’s Court should be stayed pending his appeal in the High Court.
The appeal challenges his unlawful assembly conviction.
The matter came before the Honiara Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, with discussions on how to proceed following Konofilia’s appeal.
The court raised whether proceedings should be stayed pending the High Court appeal or whether sentencing submissions should proceed first.
The court further adjourned the matter to August 11 to allow counsel time to discuss and agree on the appropriate way forward.
The presiding magistrate said the issue needed to be properly considered because the law was clear on what happens when a matter is appealed to the High Court.
She noted that where a matter had been appealed to the High Court, the lower court would have no power to interfere with or determine matters that fell within the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The magistrate also acknowledged that Konofilia’s appeal relates to the judgment and conviction, while the Magistrate’s Court was now dealing with the question of punishment.
She said the court needed to consider how Konofilia could properly exercise his right of appeal while the sentencing process was still pending.
The magistrate encouraged the parties to discuss the issue and determine their position before the court finalises the next step in the matter.
Konofilia was previously convicted of one count of unlawful assembly, contrary to section 74(1) of the Penal Code.
This followed the court’s finding that he knowingly took part in an unlawful assembly during the civil unrest that erupted in Honiara on November 24, 2021.
He was acquitted of a separate charge of sedition.
At an earlier appearance, Konofilia told the court that he had filed a notice of appeal against his conviction in the High Court, with assistance from the Public Solicitor’s Office.
His previous lawyer, Lily Ramo of JustLaw Attorneys, had withdrawn from acting for him, after which Konofilia sought legal representation from the Public Solicitor’s Office.
Public Solicitor lawyer Thompson Fiuga has since taken over the matter and is representing Konofilia.
The case had initially been adjourned for sentencing submissions and mitigation.
However, the pending appeal has now raised the question of whether sentencing should proceed before the High Court determines the appeal.
Counsels will return to court on August 11 to decide whether the defence will seek a stay of proceedings or proceed with sentencing submissions pending the appeal.

Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Drone Support Unit (DSU) Officer-in-Charge Sergeant (Sgt) Moli Puiaraha and Police Constable (PC) Christopher Walerefoa have been selected to deploy with the Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG) in support of security operations for the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM) in Palau.
The deployment is a significant achievement for the RSIPF and the Solomon Islands, recognizing the Drone Support Unit as a leading Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) capability among Pacific police organizations. The selection reflects the unit’s operational experience, professionalism and commitment to modern policing.
Assistant Commissioner (AC) National Operations, Lionel Kapisa, said the selection demonstrates the growing capability and professionalism of the RSIPF.
AC Kapisa said, “This deployment reflects our commitment to building modern policing capabilities that support our communities and regional security. The selection of Sgt Puiaraha and PC Walerefoa demonstrates the confidence our regional partners have in the capability, professionalism and readiness of our officers. I acknowledge the hard work of the DSU and the support from RAPPP in strengthening our training, capability and operational readiness.”
Over recent years, the RSIPF DSU has supported major national events, critical incidents, search and rescue operations, disaster response, crime scene management, public order operations and specialist tactical deployments. Through the use of unmanned aircraft systems, the unit has provided real-time aerial intelligence that has enhanced decision-making, improved officer safety and strengthened policing outcomes.
The unit has also achieved a significant milestone by becoming one of the first law enforcement agencies in the Pacific to obtain certification under the Civil Aviation Authority of Solomon Islands (CAASI) Part 102 framework, demonstrating its commitment to safe, professional and compliant UAS operations.
Sgt Puiaraha said the deployment is a proud milestone for the unit and reflects the dedication of its members.

She said, “This is a proud moment for our unit and the RSIPF. Being selected reflects the confidence our regional partners have in our capability and professionalism. The continued growth of the DSU has been supported through the RSIPF–Australian Federal Police Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP), with assistance in governance, training, operational capability and aviation compliance frameworks. This partnership has strengthened the unit’s readiness to support both national and regional policing requirements.

As part of their preparation, Sgt Puiaraha and PC Walerefoa will travel to Pinkenba, Queensland, on 14 August for pre-deployment induction and operational recertification training with the PPSG. They will then deploy to Palau from 26 August to 8 September to provide aerial surveillance, situational awareness, operational intelligence and specialist unmanned aircraft support during the PIFLM security operation.
The deployment highlights the confidence regional policing partners have in RSIPF capabilities and reinforces Solomon Islands’ growing contribution to regional security. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, exchange knowledge and further enhance the DSU’s capability.
The RSIPF wishes Sgt Puiaraha, PC Walerefoa and the wider PPSG every success and looks forward to the experience and knowledge they will bring back to strengthen policing capabilities in Solomon Islands.

Chief Justice urges SIBA to
strengthened rule of law

Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer has stressed the importance of having a strong, independent and capable legal profession to uphold the rule of law and strengthen public confidence in the administration of justice in Solomon Islands.
Speaking at the official opening of the Solomon Islands Bar Association’s new office in Honiara on Friday, Sir Albert said an independent legal profession was one of the essential pillars of a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
“The Bar Association occupies a unique position within our justice system,” he said.
“It represents the interests of legal practitioners, promotes professional ethics and competence, supports continuing legal education, contributes to legal reform and most importantly, safeguards the independence and integrity of the legal profession,” Sir Albert added.
“At the same time, the Association serves a broader public purpose. It strengthens public confidence in the administration of justice and helps ensure that every citizen has access to competent and ethical legal representation,” Sir Albert said.
“An effective legal profession benefits not only lawyers and the courts - it benefits the entire nation.”
The Chief Justice also highlighted the importance of a strong relationship between the Judiciary and the legal profession, saying the Bench and Bar share a common responsibility in maintaining public confidence in the administration of justice.
He said while judges and lawyers have different roles, their responsibilities are complementary.
“Judges must remain independent and impartial,” he said, adding that lawyers must represent their clients fearlessly, competently and ethically.
“A strong Judiciary requires a strong and independent legal profession, just as a strong legal profession depends upon an independent and respected Judiciary,” Sir Albert said.
He said the Judiciary and SIBA have enjoyed a constructive relationship over the years and expressed his hope that the partnership would continue as both institutions work towards their common objectives.
Sir Albert also stressed the importance of partnerships in strengthening the country’s justice system, acknowledging the support of the Australian Government, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australia Solomon Islands Partnership for Justice (ASIPJ).
He said Australia has been a trusted partner in supporting justice sector institutions in Solomon Islands through assistance in areas including judicial education, court administration, infrastructure, legal reform, institutional strengthening and professional development.
The Chief Justice said the support for SIBA’s new office was another practical demonstration of the partnership and the shared commitment to strengthening the rule of law.
Looking to the future, Sir Albert said he hoped the new SIBA office would serve as a place of service, professionalism and leadership, while strengthening the unity and integrity of the legal profession.
He also said the legal profession has a wider responsibility beyond resolving disputes.
“I also hope that this office will serve as a visible reminder to the wider community that the legal profession exists not merely to resolve disputes, but to uphold justice, defend the Constitution, protect fundamental rights and freedoms, and preserve the rule of law upon which our democracy depends,” he said.
Sir Albert’s remarks were delivered during celebrations marking the opening of SIBA’s first permanent office, located upstairs of the Post Office building in central Honiara.
He congratulated SIBA President Peter Teddy, the Executive Committee and members of the Association on the achievement and expressed confidence in the continued development of the legal profession.
He said the new office should inspire future generations of lawyers to uphold the finest traditions of the profession and stand as an enduring symbol of the collective commitment to the rule of law in Solomon Islands.

Recovery work at the landslide site at Gold Ridge mining pit-1 have stopped.
Confirming this, officers at Tetere police station said the recovery work did not resume the day after the body of a person was found buried under the rubble on July 28.
Police officers told Island Sun today that recovery work had been carried out by RSIPF officers with machines belonging to MP for East Guadalcanal Bradley Tovosia.
“The Gold Ridge mining company did not help us, although their security personnel were standing around watching during the recovery work,” the officers said.
The recovery work was stopped despite reports from people in the communities surrounding the mining pit and nearby of persons who were missing and were suspected could be buried in the landslide, the Tetere officers told Island Sun.
Tetere police officers had told Island Sun on July 27 evening that following the landslide early that morning, people from nearby communities had come forward to report members of their households who usually go up to the pits to do illegal mining had not been seen since.
The officers had told Island Sun ‘more than 10’ people were reported missing then.
To date, no one has come forward to update Tetere police station whether the persons they had reported missing have either been found or remain missing, the officers said.
The officers said the people who live near the mining pits and involved in illegal mining have been moved away from pit-1 where the landslide took place, and are now doing their activities in pits 2 and 3.
A landslide occurred between midnight and 2am on July 27 at the pit-1 of the Gold Ridge mining company.
Recovery work uncovered the lifeless body of a man the next day.
The Gold Ridge mining company blocked media from accessing and reporting on the site, citing safety reasons and company policy.
Media association President Ofani Eremae criticised Gold Ridge Mining company for blocking media highlighting the need for independent coverage and verification of facts to what is being described as a ‘major national issue’.
Mr Eremae said the media plays a vital role in keeping the country informed, and that authorities should make themselves readily available and accessible to journalists, particularly during a matter of such national significance.
He said the purpose of the media visit was to gather accurate information and establish the facts surrounding the incident amid the rumours and speculation circulating on social media and in the community.
Gold Ridge mining company in their statements issued following the landslide, said all their employees and machines were safe. The company also said it was cooperating with police on the matter.

Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at Tetere Police Station have uprooted more than 300 marijuana plants in Guadalcanal Plains.
The plants were uprooted over the weekend on August 2 at a riverside location close to the Ngalimera community in North Guadalcanal.
According to RSIPF, no arrest was made, as the suspect escaped when police arrived at the location of the marijuana garden.
Police have reminded those intending to cultivate marijuana that it is a serious crime under the Dangerous Drug Act, carrying a harsh penalty.
RSIPF has urged communities to cooperate in reporting illegal activities, emphasising the importance of working with police to maintain communities free from marijuana cultivation.
RSIPF said that it will continue to ensure the safety of communities and the enforcement of the law, particularly against those cultivating marijuana.

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has successfully arrested lifetime murder convict and prison escapee Hency BOSALIA, who had been unlawfully at large since escaping from custody on 2 November 2023.
Following his escape, the RSIPF conducted multiple operations to locate and apprehend the accused.
Despite extensive efforts over an extended period, the breakthrough came through effective intelligence gathering, careful operational planning, strong inter-departmental cooperation, and disciplined execution.
These combined efforts resulted in his successful apprehension and arrest on 20 July 2026.
Following his arrest, BOSALIA has been returned to lawful custody and will continue serving his life sentence at the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) facility at Rove, Honiara.
The successful arrest highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and demonstrates the importance of coordinated operational planning, strong inter-unit collaboration, and disciplined execution under challenging circumstances.
The operation also reflects the commitment of the RSIPF’s Police Response Department (PRD) to protecting the safety and security of communities throughout Solomon Islands.
It demonstrates the department’s capability to conduct complex law enforcement operations while maintaining professionalism, operational accountability, and appropriate care for persons in police custody.

Two New Zealand hikers who were stranded for days on the slopes of Mount Popomanaseu, Solomon Islands’ highest mountain, have been successfully rescued.
The New Zealand High Commission in Honiara confirmed the rescue to Island Sun this morning but said it was unable to provide further details until official clearance is received from Wellington.
“The two hikers have been rescued, but we are not in a position to provide further details at this stage. We will do so once it is cleared from Wellington,” a High Commission official told Island Sun.
The rescue comes after days of efforts involving Solomon Islands authorities and rescue teams following reports that the pair were trapped in a remote ravine after torrential rain.
As of this morning, the Solomon Islands Government has not released an official statement on the successful operation.
Police (RSIPF) told Island Sun it would give a statement this evening.
Earlier, government authorities confirmed that local rescue teams were working to reach the stranded hikers.
According to Radio New Zealand (RNZ) Pacific, the rescued men are Keanu Isaksson, 25, and Luca Zylstra-Law, 19, who were found together on Tuesday morning after being stranded on Mount Popomanaseu, which rises 2,335 metres (7,661 feet) above sea level.
In a Facebook post celebrating the rescue, Mr Isaksson’s mother, Denise Holl, wrote:
“FANTASTIC NEWS!! New pilot today... boys have felled a tree from previous gear drop and chopper was able to net them out. Hallelujah!”
The successful rescue brings an end to an anxious search and rescue operation that drew widespread attention in both Solomon Islands and New Zealand.

A rare insect believed to be attacking food crops has emerged on Simbo Island in Western Province, raising concerns over food security as communities continue to recover from the devastation caused by Cyclone Maila.
Member of the Western Provincial Assembly for Nusa Simbo, Gideon Tuke, said the unidentified pest has been destroying sweet potato gardens by feeding on both the roots and newly planted vines.
According to Tuke, the insect resembles a beetle but has never been seen on the island before.
“We don’t know the name of this insect, but it is similar to a beetle. This is a new sighting after the cyclone and we want the relevant authorities to investigate this pest, where it came from and whether it is a local insect or one introduced from elsewhere,” Tuke said.
He warned that the pest could become a serious threat to household food production if left unchecked, particularly at a time when families are working hard to restore their gardens following the cyclone.
Tuke said many residents are gradually returning to normal life despite the challenges left behind by Cyclone Maila.
He explained that communities have begun rebuilding their homes using available local materials while also restoring their food gardens to support their families.
“Men are busy constructing temporary homes while women have returned to gardening as they did before the cyclone.
“However, this does not mean my people no longer need urgent government support,” Tuke said.
He urged the national government to accelerate recovery assistance for Simbo and other cyclone-affected communities, saying many families are still struggling to rebuild their livelihoods.
Tuke said timely government intervention, including support from agricultural authorities to identify and control the pest, would help protect food crops and strengthen the island’s recovery efforts.
The appearance of the unidentified insect has prompted calls for agricultural experts to assess the situation and recommend appropriate measures before the infestation spreads further.
Stranded Pair Found
Two New Zealanders who been stranded at Mt Popomaneseu on Guadalcanal since the weekend have been rescued.
Police confirmed to Radio New Zealand that Keanu Isaksson, 25, and Luca Zylstra-Law, 19, were spotted Tuesday morning.
They have been stuck on Mt Popomanaseu after heavy torrential rain over the past days.
They sent out a satellite text message which alerted their families in New Zealand who later informed authorities in Honiara.
Rescue efforts over the past days were hampered by adverse weather condition.
Late Monday weather condition had improved allowing rescue team to continue their search.
The news is a relief to family members who have appealed for support.

New office for SIBA

The Solomon Islands Bar Association (SIBA) has a new permanent home.
This followed the official opening of a new office in Honiara which marked a significant milestone for the legal profession and the Association’s development.
The new complex, located upstairs of the Solomon Post Office building in central Honiara, was officially opened on Friday, 31 July 2026.
SIBA President Peter Teddy and Australian High Commission Minister Counsellor Stephanie Aeuckens officially cut the ribbon to mark the occasion.
The opening ceremony was followed by the blessing and dedication of the office by a church priest before members of the legal profession, government representatives and development partners gathered at the Heritage Park Hotel for speeches and refreshments.
The event was held under the theme “Anchored in Justice, Empowering the Future.”
Mr Teddy said the opening marked an important new chapter for the Association after many years of operating without a permanent home.
“For many years, our Association operated without a permanent home. Today, we change that reality,” Mr Teddy said.
He said the new office was more than just a physical space and would provide SIBA with a permanent base from which to serve its members, strengthen partnerships and support the legal profession.
“This office is more than just a physical office, it is our anchor,” he said.
Mr Teddy said the office would also provide a platform for professional development, learning and mentorship, particularly for younger members of the profession.
“An anchor holds us steady, but it also gives us the platform to look ahead. This office is designed to empower our future,” he said.
He thanked the Australian High Commission, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australia Solomon Islands Partnership for Justice (ASIPJ) for their support towards establishing the office.
The assistance included funding for furniture, equipment and other structural resources needed to make the new premises operational.
Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer welcomed the opening, describing it as an important milestone in the continuing development of the legal profession in Solomon Islands.
“It is both a privilege and an honour to join you this evening to celebrate the official opening of the new office of the Solomon Islands Bar Association,” Sir Albert said.
He said the establishment of a permanent office represented more than the acquisition of physical premises, as it demonstrated the continued growth and institutional development of SIBA.
The Chief Justice also highlighted the importance of a strong relationship between the Judiciary and the legal profession.
“A strong Judiciary requires a strong and independent legal profession, just as a strong legal profession depends upon an independent and respected Judiciary,” he said.
He said SIBA has an important role in promoting professional ethics and competence, supporting continuing legal education, contributing to law reform and safeguarding the independence and integrity of the legal profession.
Ms Aeuckens also welcomed the establishment of the new office and reaffirmed Australia’s support for SIBA and the wider justice sector.
She said the office was much more than a physical space, describing it as a reflection of a shared commitment to strengthening institutions that uphold the rule of law, promote professional excellence and contribute to public confidence in the administration of justice.
“Australia is proud to have supported this important initiative because a strong and effective Bar Association is a critical pillar of any justice system,” she said.
The launch brought together members of the Judiciary and legal profession, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, Law Reform Commission, Attorney-General’s Chambers, Australian High Commission, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Australia Solomon Islands Partnership for Justice (ASIPJ).

First Alpha Programme Graduates at Rove Correctional Centre Mark Milestone in Inmate Rehabilitation
Fifteen inmates at Rove Correctional Centre have become the first graduates of the Alpha Programme, marking a significant milestone in inmate rehabilitation through a partnership between the Correctional Services of Solomon Islands (CSSI) and One Tribe Ministries Australia (OTM).
The graduation ceremony celebrated the successful completion of the inaugural programme, which aims to support inmates in their personal, emotional, and spiritual development while preparing them for successful reintegration into society.
The Alpha Programme provides participants with a safe environment to explore faith, build positive relationships, and reflect on life through open discussion and shared learning.
One Tribe Ministries representative Geoff Kaka described the graduation as the beginning of a journey of transformation rather than the end of a course.
"We are encouraged by the commitment shown by each of the 15 participants. Alpha is about giving people hope and helping them discover that positive change is possible. Our prayer is that what has begun inside these walls will continue to shape their lives, their families, and their communities when they return home," Mr Kaka said.
Fellow One Tribe Ministries representative Rod said the partnership with CSSI demonstrates the positive impact that faith-based rehabilitation programmes can have within correctional facilities.
"Around the world, we have seen Alpha bring hope and restoration to people in prisons, and today we celebrate seeing that same opportunity become a reality here in the Solomon Islands. We are grateful to CSSI for opening its doors and embracing a programme that encourages dignity, responsibility, and a renewed sense of purpose," Rod said.
CSSI acknowledged the valuable contribution of One Tribe Ministries Australia in delivering the programme and reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitation as a key pillar of the correctional system.
The successful completion of the first Alpha Programme reflects CSSI's ongoing commitment to working with churches, faith-based organisations, and community partners to provide inmates with opportunities for personal growth, rehabilitation, and successful reintegration into society.
Following the success of the inaugural programme, both CSSI and One Tribe Ministries hope to expand Alpha to more inmates, enabling more individuals to benefit from its message of hope, restoration, and personal transformation.
