If you close your eyes and picture a typical South Pacific Island with its clear blue water, pure white sand and lush green foliage, that’s pretty much Njari Island!
But here’s the thing, while this place might be small (at just a few hectares in size), it
punches way above its weight when it comes to marine biodiversity and environmental protection, championed by ex-pat turned Solomon Islands resident turned master diver, Danny Kennedy.

The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) this week honoured three veteran Solomon Islands staff members during a farewell ceremony at its Headquarters in Honiara, recognising more than 121 years of combined service to the Agency and its Members.
Davinia Boso, Elizabeth Suri and John Tommy have each dedicated decades of service to FFA, supporting the Agency through its growth from its early years in Honiara into the region’s leading fisheries advisory body.
Their careers span much of FFA’s history in Honiara and reflect the important contribution Solomon Islanders have made to the Agency since it established its Headquarters in Solomon Islands in 1979.
Ms Boso began her career with FFA in July 1980 as a typist when the Secretariat operated from its first Honiara office location at Lengakiki. Over more than 46 years of service, she witnessed the Agency’s transformation from an office that relied on typewriters, handwritten records and fax machines to one supported by modern digital technology.
Davinia Boso, FFA’s longest-serving staff member, retires after more than 46 years of dedicated service. She is pictured with FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop, left, and FFA Interim Deputy Director-General Allan Rahari. Photo: FFA
Throughout her career, Ms Boso served under all eight FFA Director-Generals.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution, FFA named one of its conference rooms the Davi-Su Conference Room during its 40th anniversary celebrations in 2020. The room honours both Ms Boso and another fellow long-serving Solomon Islands staff member Susan Olisukulu, who also joined the Agency in 1980, recognising their decades of commitment to FFA and its Members.
In her farewell speech, Ms Boso stepped back in time, and detailed her humble beginnings with FFA.
“All FFC [Forum Fisheries Committee] meetings back then had all meeting papers typed manually from the typewriter. Susan and I had to be very careful when typing FFC papers and reports with manual typewriters because making mistakes meant re-typing the entire document. Now, we have computers, printers, and heavy-duty photocopiers, and so forth,” she said smiling.
Ms Suri joined FFA in May 1984 as a typist before becoming an Office Support Service Assistant. For more than 42 years, she has been the welcoming face of the Secretariat, greeting generations of Members, partners and visitors with warmth, professionalism and a smile.

Mr Tommy joined FFA in September 1994 as a carpenter before becoming Maintenance Officer in 1999. For more than 31 years, he has helped maintain the Agency’s facilities, providing dependable support that enabled staff to carry out their work effectively.

The farewell ceremony included special video tributes from former Director-Generals and Deputy Director-Generals, reflecting on the legacy the three retiring staff members leave behind.
Former FFA Director-General (2000–2006) and current Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Hon. Feleti Teo, said the three would always be remembered for their humility and dedication.
“Although it has been 20 years since my family and I left FFA, I still remember Davi, Liz and John with great fondness. They quietly carried out their work with humility and dignity, setting an example through their dedication and service.”
Former FFA Director-General James Movick (2012–2018) said the three had each become synonymous with the Agency in their own way.
“When I think of FFA, I first think of its people, and today we honour three who have each given decades of their lives to this institution. Davi carried FFA through change with grace, Liz became the smiling face who welcomed every visitor, and John quietly held the workplace together behind the scenes.”
Former FFA Director-General (2018–2024) Dr Manu Tupou-Roosen said the three had become the custodians of FFA’s institutional memory.
“People like Davi, Eli and John are rare. They have been the keepers of the culture, the memory and the values of this institution. FFA is a stronger organisation because of their lives, their work and their commitment, and their legacy will continue long after today.”
Speaking at the ceremony, FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop thanked the three retirees for their outstanding service and lasting contribution to the Agency.
“To Davinia, Elizabeth and John, retirement is not simply an ending. It is a harvest. May the years ahead bring you rest worthy of the labour you have given, previous time with those you love, and the quiet joy of reflecting upon a life of service well-lived.”
HONIARA, 31 July 2026

SICCI CONFIRMS DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER LINE-UP FOR INAUGURAL PNG–SOLOMON ISLANDS INVESTMENT CONFERENCE
HONIARA, Solomon Islands – The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) is pleased to announce two distinguished economists as confirmed speakers for the historic inaugural Papua New Guinea–Solomon Islands Investment Conference, taking place in Honiara on 19–20 August 2026.
Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) Governor, Dr Luke Forau, will deliver a keynote address providing authoritative insights into the Solomon Islands economic landscape, offering delegates a comprehensive understanding of the country's macroeconomic environment and investment climate.
Dr Forau holds a PhD in Economics from the University of New England, Australia, and brings decades of high-level policy experience to the forum. As Governor of CBSI, he has been at the forefront of monetary policy formulation and financial sector development in Solomon Islands. Dr Forau has been instrumental in championing financial inclusion programs aimed at expanding access to formal banking services for underserved communities, particularly in rural and remote areas. Under his leadership, CBSI has driven initiatives to increase digital financial literacy, promote microfinance, and support women and youth entrepreneurship through targeted policy interventions.
Beyond his domestic focus, Dr Forau has actively pursued research collaborations with regional institutions, including the University of the South Pacific (USP), the Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), to advance evidence-based policymaking in the Pacific. His recent work has examined the intersection of climate resilience and economic stability, the role of remittances in household welfare, and the potential for digital currencies to enhance financial access across the region. His contributions to regional economic discourse have made him a respected voice in Pacific central banking circles, and his presence at the Forum promises to deliver critical context for investors seeking to navigate Solomon Islands' evolving economic landscape.
Joining Dr Forau is Dr Kishti Sen, Senior Pacific Economist at ANZ Banking Group, a highly regarded economist renowned for his strategic vision and proven expertise in driving economic growth analysis across the Pacific region. In his current role, Dr Sen leads ANZ's Pacific macro-research capabilities for Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands, publishing economic outlook reports and thought articles on how the region can realise its enormous economic potential. He previously served as a Senior Economist at the Reserve Bank of Fiji and at BIS Oxford Economics, bringing decades of experience in macroeconomic analysis and policy advice.
Dr Sen will deliver authoritative commentary and actionable insights on regional economic developments, equipping businesses and stakeholders with the knowledge needed to capitalise on emerging trends and navigate complex market landscapes across the Pacific.
PNGSIBC President Ernie Gangloff and SICCI Board Chairlady Namoi Kaluae jointly stated that the presence of both economists underscores the significance of this historic Investment Forum.
“Dr Sen's deep understanding of Pacific economies, combined with Dr Forau's intimate knowledge of the Solomon Islands economic landscape and his commitment to broadening financial access, will provide invaluable perspectives for investors and business leaders seeking to understand the opportunities within the PNG–Solomon Islands growth corridor,” Ms Kaluae stated.
“The Forum represents a landmark moment for cross-border economic cooperation between the two nations, and we look forward to welcoming delegates from both countries and beyond to what promises to be a transformative dialogue,” Mr Gangloff added.
The two-day conference, themed "From Opportunity to Investment: Building the PNG–Solomon Islands Growth Corridor," meanwhile, will take place at the Heritage Park Hotel, Honiara. It is jointly organised by SICCI and the Papua New Guinea–Solomon Islands Business Council (PNGSIBC), building on a formal Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2025.

Strengthening Fiji’s Early Warning Systems for a More Resilient Future
This morning, the Fiji Government through the Fiji NDMO, in partnership with the UNDP Pacific Office, officially opened the National Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) Workshop and National Dialogue on Fiji’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS).
Supported by the Green Climate Fund, the workshop brought together government agencies, telecommunications providers, broadcasters, development partners and technical experts, with a focus on strengthening governance arrangements, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and advancing the implementation of the Common Alerting Protocol – an internationally recognised standard that enables emergency alerts to be disseminated rapidly and consistently across multiple communication channels.
With technical support from UNDP together with the ITU, World Meteorological Organization and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - UNISDR Pacific, participants will work together to strengthen Fiji’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System and ensure timely, accurate and actionable warnings reach all communities, especially those most vulnerable to disasters and climate-related hazards.
The three-day workshop will advance efforts to establish a coordinated, people-centered and multi-hazard warning dissemination system under the global Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative.

Director-General’s Desk | US Coast Guard Pacific Commander visits FFA Headquarters
FFA today welcomed United States Coast Guard Pacific Area Commander, Vice Admiral Joseph R. Buzzella, to its Headquarters in Honiara.
FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop briefed Vice Admiral Buzzella on FFA’s mandate to support its 17 Members in the sustainable management and protection of their offshore fisheries resources, including the Agency’s role in coordinating regional fisheries surveillance and facilitating information and intelligence sharing to support national enforcement efforts.
The Director-General highlighted that support from partners such as the US strengthens the capacity of FFA Members to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. He also noted that regional fisheries surveillance increasingly contributes to broader maritime domain awareness, helping Members respond to transnational organised crime, illicit drug trafficking and other maritime security threats.
Discussions also covered the changing nature of with greater risks now linked to unreported fishing activity and misreporting, rather than unlicensed fishing or fishing in unregulated areas.
Mr Pakop also outlined FFA’s proposal for a new Regional Fisheries Surveillance Centre (RFSC) facility, a project for which the Agency is currently seeking partner support. He highlighted the proposed facility’s role as a future hub for regional and international cooperation, with the additional space and capability needed to support FFA’s expanding regional surveillance operations, partnerships and information-sharing activities.
Vice Admiral Buzzella was given a tour of the RFSC, where he observed the Centre’s operations.
Vice Admiral Buzzella provided an update on the recent signing of the Shiprider Agreement between the US and Solomon Islands, noting that it will assist Solomon Islands in protecting and enforcing its sovereign rights within its exclusive economic zone.
He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Pacific Island countries in their efforts to deter and respond to IUU fishing and acknowledged the importance of fisheries to the region’s economies.
The United States is one of FFA's Pacific QUAD partners, alongside Australia, New Zealand and France. The Pacific QUADs work closely with FFA to support Pacific Island countries through aerial surveillance, maritime patrols, intelligence analysis and other operational assistance to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

In the Pacific, energy security, economic resilience and sustainable development are deeply interconnected.
When global fuel markets fluctuate, the effects are often felt longer and more intensely across island economies. The costs ripple through households, public services and national budgets.
In her final dispatch from the Pacific, UNDP in Asia and the Pacific Regional Director, Kanni Wignaraja, joins our Resident Representative, Munkhtuya Altangerel, to discuss why these "spikes and lags" matter. And, why investing in resilient, renewable energy systems is one of the most effective ways to strengthen development gains and reduce vulnerability across the Blue Pacific.

| Good policy is the foundation of every strong organisation.
Some of FFA’s senior staff yesterday completed a Policy Workshop focused on strengthening the way policies are developed, approved and implemented across the Secretariat.
Opening the workshop, Director-General Noan David Pakop highlighted the importance of a clear and consistent policy framework as a foundation of a strong organisation, supporting good governance, accountability and effective decision-making.
The workshop followed the recent approval of a Policy Administration Review, and the KPMG Refresh Review, which identified the need to strengthen FFA's policy framework.
Throughout the day, participants worked through practical exercises using existing policies to test new templates and processes that will guide future policy development, review and approval.
The workshop marks the beginning of a refreshed approach to policy across the Secretariat, helping ensure FFA’s policies are clear, consistent and fit for purpose.
