Honiara, Solomon Islands: Ditching static lectures for dynamic skits, issue-based debates, and interactive mapping, dozens of young Solomon Islanders engaged in a high-energy civic education workshop.
Driven by a shared vision of accountable governance and informed voting, youth representatives turned abstract political concepts into real-world action points for their communities.
Supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the event brought together tertiary students from the Solomon Islands National University, and the University of the South Pacific, alongside young leaders from church networks and the Baha'i community.
Victor Ngele, Chair of the Political Parties Commission, opened the event and challenged young voters to step up as the backbone of national governance.
Quoting former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Ngele said:
"No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be included from birth, a society that cuts itself off from its youth severs its lifeline.
"Here in the Solomon Islands, young people make up a significant proportion of our population. The decisions you make today, and as voters in the years ahead, will help shape the future of our nation. By becoming informed voters and active participants, you will help build a stronger, more accountable, and more prosperous Solomon Islands."
Calling on young leaders to treat election day as the beginning, not the end, of civic duty, British High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, H.E. Paul Turner, said:
"Democracy does not stop once the ballot boxes are closed; your political participation starts now and must be continuous if we are to see real systemic change. While international partners and the UNDP work tirelessly to support electoral systems, election day is merely a milestone. The true test of a healthy democracy lies in sustained youth leadership, equal representation for women, and active collaboration with media and church leaders to build strong civil society frameworks."
Echoing this call to action, Nicole Smith, Counsellor – Governance and Stability, at the Australian High Commission to Solomon Islands, added:
"Youth are not merely the leaders of tomorrow, they are the leaders of today, and their voices are vital to building strong, transparent governance. We encourage young leaders to take up their civic responsibility, invest their time in political engagement, and work hand-in-hand with community pillars to drive positive change."
The day included a performance from DreamCast Theatre Honiara, a series of debates and 'tok stori’ sessions, and a 'Family Catalyst' exercise, in which youth designed practical strategies to lead respectful, transformative conversations about politics with their family and community.
The workshop was organised by the UN Development Programme’s Solomon Islands Democratic Governance and Electoral Assistance Project in partnership with the Solomon Islands Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

Three numbers that explain why Pacific climate finance isn't just underfunded, it's a far more complex conversation. But it doesn't have to be, and we've tried our best to simplify the complexities.
US$2.34 billion: the annual gap between what the Pacific needs and what it gets.
97.4%: the share of that finance arriving as loans, equity or guarantees, not grants.
A project-size mismatch that leaves Pacific climate projects too large for local institutions to manage, and too small to draw sustained attention from major funds.
You can find the full breakdown in our Pacific Climate Finance: State of Play explainer here

Port Vila, Vanuatu – The Government of Vanuatu has announced an investment of US$ 20 million (approximately VT 2.3 billion) in financing for the Malekula Climate Resilient Road Infrastructure Project in Malampa Province, marking a significant step towards strengthening climate-resilient and sustainable transport infrastructure on the country’s second largest island.
The Government, through the Ministry of Climate Change, Meteorology and Hydro-meteorological Services, Geological Hazards, Environment, Energy and Disaster Management, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to conduct a pre-feasibility assessment of the project.
The investment demonstrates the Government’s strong commitment to improving connectivity, enhancing resilience to climate impacts and supporting economic opportunities for communities across Malekula. This commitment is complimentary to a US$3 million grant jointly mobilised by the Government of Vanuatu in partnership with UNDP in June 2026 through the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
In response to the Government’s request, UNDP has proposed a phased approach to advance project preparation and implementation. The first phase focuses on pre-feasibility assessments of technical, economic, environmental and financial viability of the proposed road infrastructure investments and help inform subsequent project design and financing decisions.
Director General for the Ministry of Climate Change Adaptation, Meteorology, Geo-Hazards, Environment, Energy and Disaster Management, David Gibson said:
“The Government’s substantial co-financing commitment reflects the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure for Vanuatu’s long-term development and resilience agenda. Investment in resilient roads is critical to ensuring reliable access to essential services.”
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative for the Pacific Office, Abduvakkos Abdurahmanov, said:
“The proposed phased approach will help establish a strong evidence base for investment decisions while ensuring that financing arrangements are aligned with national priorities and whole-of-island development approach. Through this process, UNDP remains committed to supporting the Government of Vanuatu to develop resilient infrastructure solutions that strengthen climate adaptation and deliver sustainable benefits for communities.”
The Malekula Climate Resilient Road Infrastructure Project is expected to contribute to improved transport connectivity, increased resilience to extreme weather events and enhanced socio-economic opportunities for communities across Malekula, supporting Vanuatu’s broader sustainable development and climate resilience goals.

The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) has finalised the second distribution of 2026 funds under the U.S. Tuna Treaty, totalling US$50.42 million for Pacific Island Parties.
The distribution follows the receipt in mid-July of the US Government’s US$60 million payment for 2026, continuing its commitment under the longstanding fisheries partnership between the United States and Pacific Island countries.
Under the established distribution arrangements, US$49.5 million of the US Government’s 2026 payment has been allocated towards this second distribution. The total distribution of US$50,422,481 also includes funds from the balance of purchased fishing days and the redistribution of Fiji’s pledged share to members of the Exploratory Pool, in line with the decision of FFC Ministers in Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, in 2023.
The remaining US$10.5 million from the 2026 US Government payment has been set aside for the first distribution in 2027. These funds will be placed in a term deposit in the interim to earn interest for the benefit of the Parties.
A further US$1.5 million allocated for the Fishing Effort component will also be distributed in early 2027, once fishing activities by vessels operating under the Treaty in 2026 have been completed and the final allocation determined.
Earlier this year, the 2026 first distribution of US$10.5 million was made in February and April, using funds from the US Government’s 2025 payment.
FFA Director General, Mr Noan David Pakop welcomed the latest distribution and acknowledged the continued partnership between the United States and Pacific Island Parties.
FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop. Photo: FFA
“The U.S. Tuna Treaty remains an important and enduring partnership for our region. This latest distribution represents a significant contribution to Pacific Island Parties and reflects the value of the cooperation that has been built under the Treaty over many years.
“We acknowledge the United States Government for its continued commitment and Fiji for honouring its pledge to redistribute its share in line with the decision of FFC Ministers,” Mr Pakop added.
The U.S. Tuna Treaty is one of the Pacific’s longest-standing fisheries partnerships and provides an important framework for fisheries cooperation between the United States and Pacific Island Parties.
In July this year, the United States and the Pacific Island Parties (PIPs) met in Wellington, New Zealand, for the 2026 annual consultations under the Treaty to discuss matters relating to its implementation and the ongoing fisheries partnership.
The Treaty came into force in 1988 and provides the framework for US purse seine fishing vessels to operate in the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of Pacific Island Parties. Its terms and conditions, including its financial arrangements, have been periodically renegotiated over the years.
The latest renegotiation was concluded in June 2024, extending the Treaty for the next 10 years, from 2023–2033, with revised terms, conditions and a new financial package.
The Pacific Island Parties are Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Naoero, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

In a small kitchen near Honiara’s Fishing Village, Maeverlyn Pitanoe shows a group of women how to make coconut scones. As flour is mixed and dough is shaped, Maeverlyn talks with the women about the danger of unexploded bombs still hidden beneath land and sea across the Solomon Islands.
Her story features in a new documentary, The War Below: Restoring Hope in the Solomon Islands, a Solomon Islands-New Zealand co-production which follows survivors, advocates and those working to reduce risks and instill resilience.
