Vanuatu's Youth Parliament is underway in Port Vila, with over 50 participants representing all 18 constituencies of Vanuatu.
For some participants, the journey to Port Vila took up to two days by ferry. They travelled across the ocean united by a common purpose: to represent their communities, strengthen their understanding of democracy, and ensure that the voices of young people are heard.

🌏 Building a Climate-Resilient and Inclusive Energy Transition in Vanuatu 🇻🇺
Disaster resilience, energy access, and social equity are deeply interconnected. In Vanuatu, where 71% of the population relies on decentralised, off-grid energy systems, ensuring access to clean and reliable energy during climate-related disasters is essential for community resilience, recovery, and wellbeing.
To help ensure no one is left behind, the Government of Vanuatu through Department of Energy, Vanuatu of the Ministry of Climate Change Vanuatu in partnership with UNDP, convened a validation workshop for the Gender-Responsive Capacity Needs Assessment (CNA) Findings under the Vanuatu Energy Sector Resilience Project (VERP).
Key findings from the baseline assessment include:
45% of energy sector practitioners have not received gender equality training in the past two years.
57% identified limited gender awareness as the primary obstacle to an inclusive green energy transition.
Operational reality: As seasonal labour migration predominantly affects men, women are increasingly the de facto day-to-day operators of community hydro and solar systems. Equipping women with technical, operation, and maintenance skills is both an equity goal and an infrastructure reliability priority.
The validation workshop marks an important milestone in finalising the CNA Findings Report and shaping key VERP deliverables, including:
An enhanced Gender Action Plan
Climate-Resilient Technical Design Guidelines for micro-hydro and solar systems
A long-term Gender-Responsive Capacity Development Framework
The project is implemented by UNDP in close partnership with the Department of Energy, Government of Vanuatu, and is funded through the Infrastructure Resilience Accelerator Fund under the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States flagship programme of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure

The Government of Tonga, through Ministry of Meidecc - Tonga, with support from The Biodiversity Finance Initiative - BIOFIN convened key stakeholders in Nuku'alofa for the Policy and Institutional Review validation workshop.
Participants examined 33 biodiversity financing mechanisms across seven thematic areas and explored practical financing solutions to increase investment in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development.
The workshop marked an important milestone in Tonga's BIOFIN process and will inform the next stages of the initiative, including the Biodiversity Expenditure Review, Finance Needs Assessment and Biodiversity Finance Plan.

The Government of Tonga, through the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications, with support from UNDP's Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), convened key stakeholders in Nuku'alofa for the Policy and Institutional Review (PIR) Validation Workshop.
The workshop was officially opened by the Acting Director of the Department of Environment, Mr Siosinua Latu, who underscored the importance of strengthening biodiversity financing to advance Tonga's environmental priorities and sustainable development objectives.
Participants were also welcomed by the Deputy Resident Representative of the UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji, Mr Abduvakkos Abdurahmanov, who reaffirmed UNDP's commitment to supporting Tonga in identifying and mobilising innovative financing solutions for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Bringing together representatives from government, NGOs, financial institutions, civil society organisations, academia, development partners, the private sector and local communities, the workshop reviewed and validated findings on Tonga's biodiversity policy, institutional and financing landscape.
Participants examined 33 biodiversity financing mechanisms across seven thematic areas and explored practical financing solutions to increase investment in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development.
Key financing solutions identified included:
• Environmental levies and conservation trust funds
• Blue economy financing
• Sustainable tourism revenue mechanisms, including whale watching, snorkelling, canoeing and kayaking activities
• Conservation-linked cultural tourism contributions
• Private sector partnerships and co-financing arrangements for conservation
• Community-based conservation financing
• Financing for marine protected areas and ecosystem restoration
• Integrated biodiversity and climate financing solutions
The workshop marked an important milestone in Tonga's BIOFIN process and will inform the next stages of the initiative, including the Biodiversity Expenditure Review, Finance Needs Assessment and Biodiversity Finance Plan. These assessments will help identify opportunities to mobilise resources, strengthen biodiversity financing systems and support the conservation and sustainable management of Tonga's rich biodiversity.

Director-General’s Desk | Thailand Ambassador visits FFA Headquarters
FFA this afternoon welcomed Thailand’s Ambassador to Australia, Her Excellency Arjaree Sriratanaban, to the FFA Headquarters in Honiara during her first official visit to Solomon Islands.
Acting Director-General Allan Rahari briefed Ambassador Sriratanaban on FFA’s work and priorities in supporting its 17 Members to derive enduring economic and social benefits from the sustainable use of their offshore fisheries resources.
Mr Rahari highlighted the contribution of the region’s healthy tuna fisheries to national economies and development, and their importance to the wider aspirations of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. He also outlined FFA’s three guiding priorities: Commitment to Members, Collaboration for Impact, and Capability within the Secretariat.
Ambassador Sriratanaban expressed interest in learning more about FFA’s work, the challenges facing its Members, and areas where Thailand could contribute. She highlighted Thailand’s experience as a major fisheries nation and the potential to share knowledge and expertise with Pacific Island countries.
Both sides recognised the importance of increasing the value Pacific Island countries retain from their fisheries resources and discussed potential cooperation in fisheries-related micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, capacity-building and scholarships, value-chain development, fisheries surveillance, information exchange and knowledge-sharing.
FFA and the Embassy of Thailand will continue discussions to identify practical opportunities for cooperation, building on Thailand’s wider engagement with Pacific Island countries as a Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue Partner.

🐟 FFA strengthens support for PNG tuna industry and EU market access
The FFA Market Access Team has completed an in-country technical mission to Papua New Guinea from 28 July - 7 August 2026, supporting the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and PNG’s tuna industry to prepare for evolving European Union food safety and market access requirements.
👥 The mission brought together 30 participants, 15 women and 15 men, from the National Fisheries Authority and PNG’s tuna industry.
The mission focused on Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/1449, with discussions covering its practical implementation, implications for HACCP systems, and new EU requirements for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) monitoring.
📍 Across Lae, Wewak, and Madang, the FFA team delivered technical training, held meetings with the NFA, visited EU-listed processing establishments, and engaged directly with tuna industry representatives.
The mission helped strengthen understanding and confidence around the new requirements, while identifying future areas for technical support, including PFAS risk assessment and monitoring, food safety standards, capacity building, and industry innovation.

Based in Honiara, Bernard leads the World Bank's comprehensive program of lending, technical assistance, and advisory services across both nations. He works hand-in-hand with government, civil society, and the private sector to tackle Solomon Islands' most pressing challenges—from climate resilience and infrastructure to human capital development. With over two decades of experience in development policy, governance reform, and crisis response, Bernard brings a global perspective rooted in deep Pacific understanding.
Michael White – Country Operations Head, Solomon Islands Resident Mission, Asian Development Bank (ADB)
As ADB's Country Operations Head, Michael manages the bank's sovereign and non-sovereign operations across the country, ensuring every project aligns with national development priorities. His portfolio spans transport, energy, urban services, and public sector management.
