PM PLEDGES STRONGER G7+ LEADERSHIP
PRIME Minister Matthew Wale today met with the secretariat of the G7+ at the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC).
Discussions were centred on strengthening Solomon Islands’ leadership of the organisation and expanding its role in peace building, mediation, economic development and international advocacy.
The G7+ General Secretary Dr. Helder da Costa congratulated Solomon Islands on assuming the chairmanship of G7+ and praised Prime Minister Wale’s leadership on his international engagements.
He also outlined opportunities for Solomon Islands to use its chairmanship to advance the interests of G7+ members, including through greater engagement at the United Nations and strengthening the organisation’s observer status.
Prime Minister Wale welcomed the engagement stating that Solomon Islands could benefit significantly from greater cooperation and experience sharing among G7+ members.
He also reflected on Solomon Islands’ own experience with conflict, peace building and transitional justice.
Prime Minister Wale also emphasised the need for the G7+ to gradually build its capacity and credibility rather than taking on more than it can manage.
He said the organisation has the potential to provide an important platform for countries facing conflict and political challenges to engage in dialogue rather than violence.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Solomon Islands’ interest in learning from Timor-Leste’s experience in managing natural-resource revenues, including through its sovereign wealth fund, as the country considers how to ensure its mineral and natural resources contribute to long-term national development.
Dr da Costa welcomed Solomon Islands’ priorities and expressed confidence that the country’s chairmanship could help strengthen the organisation’s international visibility, peer-to-peer cooperation and role as an “agent of peace.”
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to work closely together during Solomon Islands’ G7+ chairmanship.
Solomon Islands is expected to hold high-level meetings with the G7+ in New York on the margins of the United Nation General Assembly later this year. -PRESS RELEASE

RSIPF Farewell four CPLT officers after deployment in SI
The Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) has farewelled four China Police Liaison Team (CPLT) members at Rove police headquarters on 10 August 2026.
The four-member team who were farewelled were working closely with different departments in the RSIPF for the past six months to boost the capability of the RSIPF in different training and community engagement programmes.
Acting Commissioner of RSIPF Mr James Aitorea thanked the CPLT members for the great support rendered to the RSIPF during their deployment in the Solomon Islands (SI).
Commissioner Aitorea said, “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to CPLT for your outstanding work and dedication shown through the numerous different projects that have led to the continued development and cooperation between our two countries.”
Commissioner RSIPF Aitorea congratulates the departing four CPLT members for the outstanding job they did during their deployment in the SI.
CPLT Commissioner Mr. Bai Haitao said, 'Standing here today, seeing our four departing officers being honoured by the RSIPF leaders, my heart is filled with immense pride and profound appreciation.'
Commissioner Bai Haitao said today is a day of mixed feelings. We are here to celebrate four exceptional officers who have successfully completed their mission in the SI.
He said six months ago they left their families in China and travelled thousands of miles to the "Hapi Isles". They didn't just bring their professional expertise; they brought their hearts, their dedication, and an unshakeable commitment to serving alongside our RSIPF brothers and sisters.
“From high-level strategic liaison and tactical training to crime investigation and community outreach, these four officers worked shoulder-to-shoulder with you every single day. They walked through your communities, trained under the hot sun, and shared in every challenge and triumph.
Because of their devotion—and because of your open arms—our bilateral policing cooperation is not just a partnership on paper but a vibrant, deeply trusted, and unbreakable brotherhood on the ground,”
said CPLT Commissioner Bai Haitao.
Representative of the outgoing CPLT, Inspector Wang Yang has acknowledged the RSIPF for being a good friend, though the deployment is completed. “As we prepare to return home, we carry with us not only proud memories of our joint achievements, but also a deep and lasting friendship. We remain fully confident in the future of RSIPF and look forward to the continued growth of bilateral police cooperation.”

Community Spirit Shines During RSIPF and RAPPP Engagement in Aola
Community spirit was on full display in Aola, East Central Guadalcanal, as the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), supported by the RSIPF Australia Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP), brought together villagers for a day of awareness, dialogue and community activities.
Held at the Luvunambuli Community, the home village of Guadalcanal Province (GP) Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Superintendent Edwin Sevoa, the engagement focused on strengthening partnerships between police and the community through education, open discussion and participation.
Despite persistent rain, the program continued inside the community hall, where officers delivered awareness sessions on community safety, the dangers of drugs, the role of Crime Prevention Committees, and the key drivers of crime. Community members also took part in an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing them to raise concerns and engage directly with police officers.
Although the rain continued throughout the day, the community decided to carry on with the planned games. Children, youth, mothers, fathers and elders all joined in the activities, creating a vibrant atmosphere of teamwork, laughter and togetherness that reflected the strength of the community.
Speaking to RAPPP Media, Chairman of the Luvunambuli United Church Community, Mr Clifford Thugea, thanked the RSIPF and RAPPP for choosing to visit Aola.
"We are so happy that the police and RAPPP came to our community. The awareness shared today will help shape and strengthen our community. Although Aola is far from Honiara and has no permanent police presence, visits like this remind our people that we all have a responsibility to respect the law," Mr Thugea said.
Community elder Mr Jacob Kukiti also welcomed the visit, saying the knowledge shared would benefit families and future generations.
GP PPC Superintendent Edwin Sevoa said community policing is built on trust and cooperation.
"Today's engagement showed the value of working together. Despite the rain, the community chose to continue with the program, demonstrating their commitment to building a safer community. When police and communities work together, we can prevent crime, strengthen relationships and create safer communities for everyone," Superintendent Sevoa said.
During the visit, Superintendent Sevoa also presented sporting equipment to representatives of the Luvunambuli and neighbouring Mbalo communities to encourage positive youth engagement and active community participation.
The Aola engagement forms part of the RSIPF's ongoing community policing program, supported by RAPPP, across Guadalcanal Province. It follows successful engagements in Tamboko, Visale and Tetere, with more communities set to benefit as the partnership continues to promote crime prevention and build safer, stronger communities across Solomon Islands.

RAPPP Supports RSIPF Women to Lead, Inspire and Drive Change
1. Invited guests listen during the opening program as Master of Ceremonies Inspector Florence Wasi guides participants through the RSIPF WAN General Meeting.
More than 200 women police officers from across Solomon Islands gathered in Honiara on 22–23 July for the RSIPF Women's Advisory Network (WAN) Annual General Meeting, held under the theme "We Lead: Empowering Women, Inspiring Change." The event was supported by the RSIPF and AFP Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP).
The two-day event brought together women from every province, command and rank within the RSIPF to strengthen professional networks, share experiences, build leadership skills and help shape the future of women in policing. The AGM reflects the ongoing commitment of the RSIPF and RAPPP to building a stronger, more inclusive police service.
Held at Heritage Park Hotel, the AGM gave participants the opportunity to discuss issues affecting women police officers, contribute to the development of the RSIPF Gender Strategy 2026–2036, and take part in sessions on leadership, wellbeing, professional development and gender inclusion.
Opening the AGM, Acting Commissioner RSIPF James Aitorea reaffirmed the RSIPF's commitment to creating opportunities for women to lead and succeed.
"Women make an important contribution across the RSIPF, including in frontline policing, investigations, operations, administration, community engagement, leadership and provincial policing," Acting Commissioner Aitorea said.
"Supporting women in policing strengthens the whole organisation and improves the RSIPF's ability to serve communities with professionalism, trust and respect. The RSIPF remains committed to building a safe, respectful, inclusive and capable police force where all members have the opportunity to contribute and lead."
RAPPP Executive Kylie Walsh also highlighted the importance of women's leadership and the role of WAN in creating opportunities for women across the organisation.
"Through the partnership between the RSIPF and AFP under RAPPP, we continue to support initiatives that strengthen women's leadership, build capability and promote gender inclusion across the organisation. Bringing together women police officers from every province creates valuable opportunities to share experiences, strengthen professional networks and support the next generation of women leaders within the RSIPF," Walsh said.
Throughout the AGM, participants took part in leadership discussions, a Women in Leadership panel, provincial presentations and workshops that will help shape the organisation's next Gender Strategy. The AGM was supported by RAPPP as part of its ongoing partnership with the RSIPF to strengthen leadership, organisational capability and gender equality.
A key outcome of the AGM was the election of a new Women's Advisory Network Executive for the next two-year term. Members elected RSIPF Gender Coordinator Staff Sergeant Faye Siapu as the new WAN Chair, along with a new committee that will continue to support and represent women across the organisation.
Outgoing WAN Chair Gina Taupongi said the network continues to play an important role in supporting and empowering women throughout the RSIPF.
"When women support women, we all succeed. This AGM is about ensuring every woman in RSIPF, regardless of where she serves, has a voice, has support and has the confidence to lead. Together, we are creating opportunities for the next generation of women in policing."
Mrs Taupongi congratulated the newly elected Executive and wished them well as they begin their two-year term.
"I would like to congratulate Staff Sergeant Faye Siapu on her election as the new WAN Chair, along with the newly elected committee members. I wish them every success as they lead the Women's Advisory Network over the next two years. I have every confidence they will continue to strengthen the network and support women across the RSIPF."
She also thanked WAN members, the RSIPF Executive, RAPPP and all partners for their continued support throughout her term as Chair.
The AGM also highlighted progress in gender equality across the RSIPF, including leadership development opportunities, mentoring initiatives, increased recruitment of women and improved support for female officers.
Through RAPPP, the Australian Federal Police continues to work alongside the RSIPF to strengthen leadership, organisational capability and gender inclusion across the organisation.
As the AGM concluded, participants were encouraged to identify practical ways they could support and empower other women within the RSIPF. The event showcased the leadership, professionalism and contribution of RSIPF women and reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to building a more inclusive and capable police force for Solomon Islands.

PM WELCOMES OPPOSITION SUPPORT ON FREE EDUCATION PRINCIPLE
PRIME Minister Hon. Matthew Wale has welcomed the Opposition Leader’s support to the free education principle that ‘the classroom shall not be closed in the face of any Solomon Islands child because of the poverty of that child's parents.’
Speaking in his closing remarks to the Speech from the Throne yesterday, the Prime Minister also put on record straight that the policy of this Government is not a slogan called “fee-free.”
“Let me correct this because the name matters. It is ‘Free Education’. It is the deliberate decision of this Government that the gate of the classroom shall not be closed in the face of any Solomon Islands child because of the poverty of that child's parents. That is the principle,” he said.
“I was glad to hear the Honourable Opposition Leader say, in terms, that the Opposition does not oppose the principle. So let the country hear it plainly: on the destination, both sides of this House agree,” he told Parliament.
Prime Minister Wale acknowledged that the debate is about the pathway going forward.
He said on the question of definition, the design of the policy including precisely where the boundary of “free” is drawn, which providers it covers, and how it sits within the Education Act 2023 and the Education Regulations 2024, is being finalised by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development.
Prime Minister Wale said that design, together with the implementing legislation and its full costing will come before Parliament in the budget session at the end of this year.
“This House will not be asked to vote on a slogan. It will be asked to vote on a Bill and on an appropriation. With the definition and the numbers on the Table, before the first dollar is spent and before the first school year opens under the policy. That is the sequence and it is the right sequence,” he said.
On the question of cost, the Prime Minister said the recurrent commitment is substantial and the Ministry of Finance and Treasury continues to work through it as part of the medium-term fiscal framework.
“I will not pretend to this House that a commitment of this scale leaves the rest of the Budget untouched. There will be changes to the Budget, that is what it means to reorder the priorities of a nation around its children,” he said.
On the question of quality, the Prime Minister said access to education and access to quality education are both achievable and neither will be traded for the other.
“The choice the Opposition Leader placed before the House between free education and quality education, is a false choice and this Government rejects it,” he said.
On the question of donor support, Prime Minister Wale said our development partners today and under every Government are among the biggest supporters of education in Solomon Islands.
“But the Honourable Leader's underlying point is one I accept, and accept fully: start up assistance is not permanent national capacity and a responsible government does not build a permanent policy on scaffolding it does not own,” he said.
“That is exactly why this Government is doing what it is doing: plugging the leakages, broadening the revenue base, and preparing this country, year by year, to absorb the cost of Free Education with its own resources.”
The Prime Minister said the policy is not intended to be dependent for eternity.
“The whole architecture of this Government's fiscal programme, revenue reform included, exists so that the education of Solomon Islands children will stand, in time, on Solomon Islands revenue,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Wale also invited the Opposition to bring its “practical Solomon Islands model” as proposed and supported by the Opposition to the committee tables when that legislation is before them.
“I invite the Opposition and I mean this as a genuine invitation, if there are provisions in the Education Act 2023 worth strengthening rather than replacing, let us strengthen them together. A policy for every child in this country deserves the fingerprints of every side of this House,” he said. -PRESS RELEASE

-PRESS RELEASE

PM: NO GOV’T HAS COSTED THRONE SPEECH : BUDGET IS THE PROPER TEST
PRIME Minister Hon. Matthew Wale says the Government is committed to fiscal responsibility, clarifying that the Speech from the Throne is a policy statement that sets direction and not a budget document.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Wale said it is a “simple constitutional truth” that the Speech from the Throne outlines the Government’s programme and legislative agenda, while the detailed financial framework is properly presented through the national Budget.
“The numbers follow in the instrument our Constitution prescribes and that instrument is the Budget,” Prime Minister Wale stated.
He said work is already underway within the Ministry of Finance and Treasury and the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination to develop a medium-term fiscal framework.
The Prime Minister said this would be presented to Parliament through the 2027 Appropriation Bill later this year.
“That is where the fiscal envelope will be laid before this House, line by line, as it should be. This House will test every commitment of the Speech against it,” he said.
Prime Minister Wale also addressed criticisms raised during the debate, noting that no previous government, including those led or served by the current Opposition Leader, had attached a costed medium-term fiscal framework to a Speech from the Throne.
The Prime Minister said the Leader of Opposition knows better as a former Prime Minister and should not mislead Parliament and the people.
“Not one,” he said.
“And that was not a failure of those Governments; it was the correct understanding of what a Speech from the Throne is.”
Prime Minister Wale stressed that fiscal credibility must be judged through the Budget process where all commitments are scrutinised transparently by Parliament.
“The measure of fiscal credibility is the Budget and this Government will meet that measure in this Chamber before this year is out,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Wale said the Government remains committed to responsible economic management and ensuring that all policy priorities announced in the Speech from the Throne are backed by a credible and accountable fiscal framework. -PRESS RELEASE

-PRESS RELEASE
