MAORO Community High School Receives New $1.8 Million Classroom Facility Maoro, 20 August 2026 - A newly completed 8-block double-storey classroom building has been officially handed over to Maoro Community High School in Central Kwaarae, Malaita Province, marking a major investment in modern and more conducive learning spaces for students. The facility, valued at SI$1.8 million, was constructed by Trade Works Contractors Limited and is one of the infrastructure deliverables supported by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development. Upon arrival in Auki, the MEHRD delegation received a surprise protocol-level welcome at the wharf by the Provincial Education Office before being escorted to the Premier’s Office for a courtesy visit. The delegation then travelled to Maoro community straight after the courtesy visit, for the official handover of the newly constructed classroom building to the Maoro Community High School. The handover ceremony was attended by provincial leaders, education officials, church representatives, teachers, students, landowners and community members. Opening the speeches was Maoro CHS Principal, acknowledging donors and expressing appreciation for the completion and handover of the new facility, describing it as a significant milestone for the school, its students and the wider Maoro community and encouraged the community to use the facility with care. Australia High Commission rep, Senior Program Manager – Education, Brenda Mauli also acknowledged the partnership MEHRD has with Australia and reiterated Australia’s commitment to support the Solomon Islands Education sector. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister for Education and Human Resources Development, Hon. Stephen Kumi, said the new classroom block represents opportunities for hundreds of students and will help prepare future leaders, teachers, nurses, engineers, business people and responsible citizens of Central Kwara’ae, Malaita Province and Solomon Islands. “A school is not measured by the size of its buildings alone, but by the quality of education it provides and the character it develops in its students”, Minister Kumi said. Minister Kumi also linked the classroom investment to the Government’s Free Education Policy, saying the policy reaffirms the Government’s commitment to making education more accessible and affordable for every Solomon Islands child, while recognising the continued shared responsibility of education providers, parents and communities. He paid tribute to the South Sea Evangelical Church as the education provider of Maoro Community High School, acknowledging its long-standing role in shaping students through quality teaching, discipline, Christian values and community partnership. The Minister also honoured the late Honourable Fiulaua, former MP for Central Kwara’ae, whose vision and commitment helped initiate the project through constituency funding. He said the completed facility stands as a lasting legacy of his dedication to education and community development. Minister Kumi encouraged students to value the new facility, take good care of it and make full use of the opportunities it provides, adding that education remains the key that opens doors to a brighter future. The handover event ended day 1 of the 2-day program for the MEHRD and guests visit. Alegegeo was also part of the delegation’s 2 day program.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI) Engagement of Business Advisory Service (BAS) Providers. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration (MCILI) Thru Business and Cooperative Division invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suitably qualified and experienced organizations, firms, non-government organizations, private sector organizations, cooperatives, educational institutions, and professional consultants to deliver Business Advisory Services (BAS) across the Solomon Islands. Background MCILI is implementing a national Business Advisory Program to strengthen the growth and sustainability of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), cooperatives, youth enterprises, women-owned businesses, agribusinesses, fisheries enterprises, tourism businesses, and rural enterprises. The program aims to improve business capability, increase access to finance, expand market opportunities, and support enterprise formalization. Scope of Services Successful providers may be engaged to deliver one or more of the following services: • Business start-up advice and business planning. • Business registration and formalization. • Financial literacy and bookkeeping. • Loan readiness and access to finance. • Cooperative development and governance. • Agribusiness and value chain development. • Fisheries, tourism and manufacturing business support. • Marketing, branding and digital commerce. • Business mentoring and coaching. • Export readiness and market linkage. • Digital business transformation. • Environmental sustainability and climate-resilient enterprise development. Eligibility Applicants should demonstrate: • Legal registration in the Solomon Islands or another recognized jurisdiction. • Proven experience in enterprise development, business advisory services, or capacity building. • Qualified personnel with relevant business, finance, agriculture, cooperative, or enterprise development expertise. • Experience working with rural communities, women, youth, and MSMEs. • Strong financial and project management systems. • Ability to deliver services in multiple provinces. Solomon Islands Calls for Stronger International Action on Drought Resilience at UNCCD COP17 Solomon Islands calls for stronger international action, investment and partnerships to build drought resilience in vulnerable countries, particularly Small Island Developing States (SIDS), during the high-level Ministerial Dialogue on Accelerating Drought Resilience at the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) today in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Hon Franklyn Derek Wasi highlighted the growing impacts of climate change on the country’s agriculture, food security, water resources, ecosystems and rural livelihoods. Although Solomon Islands is traditionally associated with abundant rainfall, changing climate patterns are resulting in increasingly frequent and unpredictable dry spells and drought conditions. These changes are creating new challenges for communities that depend heavily on rain-fed agriculture and vulnerable freshwater resources. “Agriculture remains the backbone of the Solomon Islands economy and the primary source of livelihoods for most people, the urgent need to strengthen resilience through proactive risk reduction, preparedness and adaptation cannot be overstated,” he said. The Solomon Islands government is committed to advancing integrated drought governance by mainstreaming climate resilience, sustainable land management and water resource management into national planning. Through the National Adaptation Plan and broader resilience initiatives, Solomon Islands is strengthening coordination across sectors and improving preparedness at both national and community levels. Minister Wasi also stressed the critical role of science, climate information and early warning systems. “Reliable forecasting and timely information are essential to enable governments, farmers and communities to make informed decisions and ensure that early warnings translate into early action. Financing remains a significant challenge for vulnerable developing countries. Solomon Islands called on international financial institutions, development partners and climate funds to increase support for drought preparedness, climate-resilient agriculture, water security and ecosystem restoration, with particular attention to the unique vulnerabilities of SIDS,” he said. Minister Wasi further emphasized that no country can address climate-induced drought alone. Strong international partnerships are needed to promote innovation, technology transfer, capacity building and investment in resilient agricultural and water systems. Solomon Islands supports efforts under the UNCCD to make drought resilience a central pillar of sustainable development, climate adaptation and land restoration. The Minister urged COP17 to deliver a strong message that investment in drought resilience is an investment in food security, environmental sustainability, economic stability and the wellbeing of future generations.
