Two 5000-litre water tanks were donated to the Burns Creek community.A collaborative effort recently between the National Crime Prevention Department (NCPD) of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and the China Police Liaison Team (CPLT) has delivered two 5000 litre water tanks valued at SBD $16,000 to the Burns Creek community.The tanks were donated by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Solomon Islands.In his brief remarks during the handing over programme, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of National Security and Operation Support (NSOS) Mr Simpson Pogeava said that through such initiative and collaboration, it strengthens ownership and partnership between our bilateral partners and the communities we serve.Dr Johnny Tasa, during the official handing over ceremony, said the water tanks and a visit to the Sista sewing workshop, also built by China for Burn Creek, are a picture painted by China that we truly value and appreciate.Dr Tasa called on all community members to use wisely and respect these gifts and described the donation as more than just a mere collaboration between China and the Solomon Islands.He said it is the strength of togetherness, respect and partnership that were made possible by the hard work of the CPLT and the RSIPF NCPD team.The embassy representative, counsellor Zhao Jinyong reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to people-centered cooperation and expressed hope that the contribution would bring tangible comfort to local community.The Burns Creek community chairman acknowledged the RSIPF NCPD team and the China embassy and CPLT representatives for their continuous support in creating such opportunities in rural communities, describing it as a reflection of the warm friendship between the two peoples.

“ROBBERY DECORATED IN EXEMPTIONS”: FINANCE MINISTER WARNS TAX ABUSERSThe GREAT Coalition is taking a clear and decisive position on one of the country’s most important economic issues: protecting public revenue and ensuring everyone pays their fair share.For too long, tax exemptions, weak administration and opportunities for tax avoidance have placed pressure on the Government’s ability to collect the revenue it needs to deliver essential services to our people.The Government will not accept a system where revenue that should rightfully belong to the people of Solomon Islands is unnecessarily forfeited.The Minister of Finance and Treasury in his speech in Parliament this week said what good does it bring to the Government when all the revenue it is supposed to receive is forfeited.“This is robbery decorated in exemptions,” he said.Minister Lilo said the Government believes in tax relief where it is justified, transparent and beneficial to the national economy.“But tax relief must never become a licence for tax abuse,” he adds.Hon. Lilo said businesses that invest, create employment and contribute to the economy will continue to be supported.But, he adds businesses and individuals deliberately avoiding their tax obligations must understand that the Government is strengthening the system to close those loopholes.“The Tax Administration Act is an important first step in this reform agenda. It strengthens tax administration, improves compliance and provides a stronger foundation for fair and effective revenue collection,” he said.Minister Lilo said the Government is now progressing further reforms, including the introduction of Value Added Tax legislation, reform of the Income Tax Act and reviews of excise and resource rent taxation.He said these reforms are not about burdening the people.“They are about building a fairer system where the tax burden is shared properly and where Solomon Islands receives a fair return from the economic activity taking place in this country,” he said.He said the GREAT Coalition is committed to ending revenue leakages, strengthening accountability and ensuring that public money is protected.“Our position is firm: no more abuse of the tax system, no more unnecessary revenue leakages and no more putting private interests ahead of the national interest,” he said.“Every dollar protected and properly collected is a dollar that can be invested back into our people, our services and our country's future.” - PRESS RELEASE[ENDS]

AG SURI REJECTS OPPOSITION CLAIMS, SAYS NO LAW OR ETHICAL STANDARD BREACHED ATTORNEY General Gabriel Suri has rejected claims by the Opposition concerning his alleged corporate relationship with Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Wale, saying there is nothing unlawful or unethical about the matter.In a statement today, Mr Suri clarified that he ceased being a director of Panatina Chemists Ltd in 2018, but his name remained on the company’s register because the persons responsible for lodging the company’s Annual Returns after 2018 failed to remove it.Mr Suri said he had repeatedly informed the relevant persons including the Registrar of Companies that he had ceased his directorship and had requested that his name be removed from the register.“In 2023, I told Wilson Rano that I had ceased to be a director when he attempted to serve a claim on me on behalf of Panatina Chemists. I had asked the Registrar of Companies to remove my name,” he said.He said he again raised the matter with the Registrar in January and February this year.Mr Suri stressed that he had not consented to his name continuing to appear on the company register.“Let’s be frank, I have not attended any meeting of directors since 2019 and have not received any allowance since then,” he said.The Attorney General explained that he ceased his directorship when Australasian Consultancy Excellence Ltd acquired substantial shares in Panatina Chemists Ltd.He said at the time, Mr Ranil Gomes was the authorised person responsible for lodging the company’s Annual Returns and that he had instructed him on several occasions to remove his name.Mr Suri said the continued appearance of his name on the company register was therefore without his consent.He said the Opposition is attempting to turn the matter into an issue without identifying any specific law or ethical standard that had been breached.The Attorney General described the claims as a “malicious witch-hunt” saying the Opposition had failed to establish any unlawful or unethical conduct on his part. - PRESS RELEASE[ENDS]

RSIPF EOD to Conduct Bomb Blast Operations in Western and Choiseul Provinces The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Department will conduct planned bomb blast operations in Western and Choiseul Provinces as part of ongoing efforts to safely dispose of unexploded ordnance (UXO). In Western Province, the UXO operations will be carried out in Munda and the surrounding communities and the islands of Rendova and Kolombangara, respectively. The dates will be from Saturday 15 August to Thursday 27 August 2026. The activities will take place daily between 8:00am and 4:00pm. In Choiseul Province, the bomb blast operations will be conducted at Tarekukure, Taro and the surrounding communities from Wednesday, 19 August, to Monday, 24 August 2026, between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm each day. Further to that, the EOD team will conduct another bomb blast operation in Shortlands, Nila, Lofung and surrounding communities from Tuesday 25 August to Monday 31 August 2026. The timings will be from 8am to 4pm, respectively. Director of EOD Department Inspector Clifford Tunuki emphasises that communities within these areas and islands are strongly advised to keep clear of the operational sites while the bomb-blast activities are in progress. Safe evacuations and road blocks will be enforced during the stated times to ensure public safety. “Affected communities will be duly informed of the specific operational sites, and the RSIPF kindly calls on all residents to cooperate with EOD officers on the ground, as the safety of the public and officers remains the highest priority,” says Mr Clifford Tunuki. The RSIPF further urges communities in Western and Choiseul Provinces to continue reporting any sightings of unexploded ordnance. Reports can be made directly to the RSIPF EOD via phone number 7495215 or to the nearest police station so that these hazards can be safely addressed while EOD teams are deployed in the area. The RSIPF thanks the public for their cooperation and continued support in keeping communities safe.

MRD DELEGATION, WITH PRC MEETS TEMOTU PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE TO STRENGTHEN DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION A delegation from the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD), along with Counsellor Li Qinghua of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), recently met with the Premier of Temotu Province Honourable Stanley Tehiahua and his Provincial Executive to dialog ongoing cooperation and explore further avenues for partnership. The visit was a significant juncture for the province, marking the first time PRC officials have travelled to Temotu, the easternmost province of Solomon Islands, as part of an official MRD delegation. It gave officials the opportunity to assess current projects, discuss future collaboration, and reaffirm the PRC’s continued support for the province’s development. Both sides acknowledged the enduring friendship between Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China, noting the tangible progress achieved through past cooperation, including the construction of clinics, schools, and roads, and the provision of boats to rural communities, which has contributed to meaningful improvements in infrastructure, transportation, and social services across the province. Discussions recognized several priority areas for continued cooperation, including infrastructure development, rural livelihoods, fisheries, renewable energy, education, and technical training. Counsellor Li conveyed China’s continued interest in supporting sustainable economic initiatives that directly benefit the people of Temotu Province, commending the progress achieved to date and expressing confidence in forthcoming initiatives, particularly in capacity building and technical training for local communities. Provincial Premier Honourable Stanley Tehiahua expressed appreciation for the PRC’s ongoing assistance and highlighted the province’s potential in fisheries, agriculture, ecotourism, and marine resource development, notwithstanding its remoteness. He also raised existing challenges relating to transportation and energy access, expressing hope that continued partnership would help address these constraints. The visit reflected the continuing spirit of mutual respect and cooperation between Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China, with both sides optimistic that expanding cooperation would deliver lasting benefits to the communities of Temotu Province. The Ministry of Rural Development remains committed to strengthening this partnership, together with the Solomon Islands Government and the People’s Republic of China, in pursuit of shared development goals for the benefit of all rural Solomon Islanders. The delegation’s visit coincided with the official handover of 21 boats and outboard motor engines, worth $1.5 million, to communities, health and education in Nende Constituency under the PRC-funded Rural Sustainable Development Program (RSDP). While there, the delegation also visited Lusalemba school, where they were warmly welcomed by teachers and students, before inspecting the China-supported National Broadband Infrastructure Project and touring the Lata Station and the ongoing airport upgrade, built by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) under World Bank funding. The AFP commissioner with OST instructors at the handing-over ceremony RSIPF and AFP Strengthen Policing Partnership with Handover of TTC The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) today (14 August 2026) celebrates a strong and enduring partnership between the RSIPF-AFP Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP) during a handover of the refurbished Tactical Training Centre (TTC) to the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF). This partnership is further strengthened through the handover of the Tactical Training Centre, marking another milestone in enhancing the capability, capacity, and professional development of the RSIPF. This project began following a request from the RSIPF National Operations Portfolio to strengthen tactical and specialist training capability within the RSIPF. The upgraded facility provides a central location where Operational Safety Training (OST), Police Response Department (PRD) and Close Personal Protection Department (CPPD) can train together, build skills and share expertise. The TTC will support approximately 1,000 RSIPF members each year and play an important role in preparing both recruits and serving officers for operational duties. Acting Commissioner RSIPF Mr James Aitorea, in his brief remarks, said the funding has delivered significant improvements to the TTC, including upgrades to training classrooms, kitchen facilities, ablutions and changing rooms; improvements to the training court; refurbishment of the surrounding grounds and road access; and the construction of a new leaf hut and outdoor facilities, including an upgraded oval to support training and operational activities. Commissioner Aitorea said the funding is a significant investment in the future of the RSIPF and supports our continued growth as a professional and capable police service. This facility belongs to the RSIPF and will support the development of our people for many years to come. Mr Aitorea said the facility will strengthen operational readiness, leadership and professionalism across the organisation. On behalf of the RSIPF, I thank our Australian partners for their continued support and commitment to Solomon Islands policing priorities. The minister for police, national security and correctional services, the Honourable John Junior Tuhaika, speaking at the TTC handing over ceremony, says, “I am confident that this facility will make a significant contribution to the capability of the RSIPF.” The minister for police acknowledged the AFP for its leadership and commitment to strengthening the capability and professional development of the RSIPF and acknowledged the government of Australia through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for its sustained support and investment in strengthening the security and institutional capacity of Solomon Islands. AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett said, “For many years, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has worked alongside the RSIPF through the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), the Solomon Islands Policing Development Program (SIPDP) and the RSIPF and AFP Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP) to strengthen specialist policing capability and operational readiness. When the RSIPF identified the need to upgrade its tactical training facilities, the Australian Government was pleased to support this important priority. The TTC represents an Australian government investment of approximately SBD $5.5 million and has created local employment opportunities during construction while utilising materials sourced from communities across the Solomon Islands. Official Handover of Awards to Strongim Bisnis - Business Accelerator Programme The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration (MCILI), through its Business and Cooperative Division, has officially handed over five laptops (5) to selected participants of the Strongim Bisnis Business Accelerator Programme as part of an ongoing partnership between MCILI to strengthen Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Solomon Islands. The Business Accelerator Programme commenced in August last year 2025 and provided participating businesses with six months of coaching, mentoring, and specialised business training. The programme culminated in a Shark Tank-style business competition, during which 10 small businesses presented their business ideas and growth plans. As part of the programme’s support package, winning participants received non-cash business assets sponsored by MCILI, including one laptop and one Starlink unit, to enhance digital connectivity, productivity, record-keeping, marketing, and access to online markets. This initiative forms part of the Government’s broader MSME Development and Indigenous Business Empowerment Programme, which aims to strengthen locally owned businesses, improve business capability, and create greater opportunities for indigenous entrepreneurs to participate in economic development. Importantly, the programme has also contributed to the development of a new blended financing facility between Strongim Bisnis and the Development Bank of Solomon Islands (DBSI). This facility is intended to support MSMEs seeking asset financing, particularly those operating in the agriculture and tourism sectors. The partnership demonstrates how government, development partners, and financial institutions can work collaboratively to move MSMEs beyond training and mentoring towards access to productive assets, finance, technology, and markets. MCILI welcomes this partnership and looks forward to expanding similar initiatives to support more Solomon Islands-owned businesses and cooperatives as part of the national MSME development agenda. Hon, 13 Aug 2026: A two-day validation workshop is currently underway at the Honiara Hotel to fine tune a management document developed to effectively manage Marine Managed Area/Marine Protected Area in Solomon Islands. In her opening remarks, Deputy Director Inshore Division, Ms Faye Siota expressed her confidence the document developed over a decade ago will be finalised and ready for implementation soon.
