New Zealand Supports Solomon Islands Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Preparedness

How do you monitor volcanic activity and prepare for a possible eruption? 🌋 Earlier this month, geoscience and meteorological staff from Solomon Islands’ Geological Survey Division (GSD) of MMERE worked alongside colleagues from Earth Sciences New Zealand(ESNZ) during a week of practical training focused on volcano monitoring, hazard assessment and eruption response. As the government agency responsible for monitoring volcanic activity in Solomon Islands, GSD works closely with the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) and provides technical advice to the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to support preparedness and response planning. Together, participants explored volcano types, volcanic hazards and impacts, monitoring techniques, satellite tools, hazard mapping and response planning. The training also included hands-on work on volcano monitoring processes, eruption confirmation, and communicating potential risks to the aviation sector. A highlight of the week was the team's work on Aviation Colour Codes and Volcano Observatory Notices for Aviation (VONAs), which provide important information to aviation authorities about volcanic activity that could affect flight safety. During the training, participants issued VONAs to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres (VAACs) in Wellington and Darwin for the first time. Both centres were highly supportive of the initiative, which helps strengthen regional information sharing and aviation safety arrangements. The week wrapped up with a simulated unrest and eruption exercise focused on Savo Volcano, allowing participants to put their new knowledge and processes into practice. New Zealand is proud to support partnerships that build capability, share technical knowledge and help Solomon Islands strengthen its preparedness for natural hazards. As a country that also lives with active volcanoes, New Zealand values opportunities to share experience and learn alongside Pacific partners. 🌋🇳🇿 🇸🇧 🌋 Earth Sciences New Zealand Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office Solomon Islands Meteorological Service

Chinese Bridge Program Strengthens Solomon Islands-China People-to-People Exchanges

Stories like this remind us that people-to-people exchanges are one of the strongest bridges between nations. Through the Chinese Bridge program, young people from the Solomon Islands have experienced China's rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality firsthand while building lasting friendships across borders. China will continue to support educational and cultural exchanges, creating more opportunities for young people to learn from one another, deepen mutual understanding, and contribute to the enduring friendship between China and the Solomon Islands.

Through recent outreach missions to Savo Island and the Russell Islands, Kaleko SteiFree – a recipient of the 2025 Solomon Islands Australia Education Partnership NGO Grant – reached eight community high schools with menstrual health awareness sessions, baseline surveys, and reusable sanitary pad kits for female students. For many girls, a lack of menstrual health knowledge and access to hygiene products can lead to embarrassment, missed classes, and falling behind in their studies. This initiative is helping to change that. By providing practical information, safe spaces for discussion, and reusable sanitary pad kits, KSS is empowering girls to manage their periods with dignity, confidence and independence, removing barriers that can keep them out of the classroom. The outreach also brought together students, teachers and school leaders in a shared commitment to creating supportive school environments where every girl feels safe, respected, and able to participate fully in school life. Australia is proud to support initiatives that ensure periods never stand in the way of a girl's education. Together, we are helping more girls stay in school, stay engaged in learning, and build brighter futures for themselves, their families and their communities. When girls stay in school, everyone benefits.
