The New Zealand High Commission wishes the people of Makira-Ulawa Province a very happy 43rd Second Appointed Day.
We are proud of our friendship with Makira-Ulawa Province and the partnerships we have built together to create opportunities for communities across the province.
Over the years, New Zealand has supported improved schools, classrooms, science laboratories, dormitories and rural training centres, alongside vocational education, community policing and safer communities.
Working with the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, New Zealand Police have also partnered with officers in Makira-Ulawa to strengthen leadership, community engagement and public confidence.
We are excited to expand our partnership through the Climate and Biodiversity Smart Marine Spatial Planning project, supporting communities to make climate-smart decisions that protect marine resources, strengthen livelihoods and build resilience for the future.
Makira-Ulawa is also benefiting from the Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) programme which supports locally led climate adaptation projects through performance-based grants, helping provinces strengthen resilience and access future climate finance.

In East and North Guadalcanal, Plant and Food New Zealand and Ola Fou are working with farmers to improve soil health and strengthen sustainable food production, helping communities adapt to a changing climate.
Guadalcanal is also one of the provinces benefiting from the Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) programme which is helping provinces access climate finance for locally led adaptation projects that strengthen resilience and support long-term development.

🌱🌊 Communities in North Malaita have begun planting 2,000+ mangroves to protect the new Malu’u Market!
Australia is proud to support this locally-led initiative—working with Fera Au Conservation Association and the North Shore Mangroves Committee to train and equip communities to preserve and protect their environment.
The mangroves will work alongside the new seawall to reduce erosion, absorb wave energy and improve water quality and marine life.
The project is creating short-term jobs, boosting community skills and building community ownership for long-term coastal resilience. Check out community action— a great example of in practice.

RSIPF and Pacific Partners helping with UXO in Vanuatu
On their way home from Tuvalu, Police Constable Barnabas Talo, Sergeant Patterson Filiga and their ADF Colleagues stopped off in Vanuatu to help the Vanuatu Mobile Force assess UXO around Cook Barracks.
This helped cap off a successful Operation Render Safe deployment to Tuvalu, where the teams undertook survey work of Nanumea Lagoon in Tuvalu and engaged with the community on the risk of UXO.

Strong roots grow bright futures🌱
New Zealand and Save the Children Solomon Islands have launched the Strong Roots, Brighter Future (Staka Roots, Brata Fiuja) project, a new partnership helping young children and families thrive in Western and Choiseul Provinces.
The project will strengthen early childhood education for children aged 3-6 years, ensuring they have access to quality, safe and inclusive learning opportunities. The Australian High Commission joined partners and colleagues to celebrate Dr Franco Rodie’s 12 years of service as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development.
A dedicated champion for education, Dr Rodie has helped expand opportunities for children and young people across Solomon Islands. His leadership has strengthened partnerships, driven key reforms, and contributed to a stronger and more inclusive education system.
