Real change starts with understanding what drives human behavior
Australia Awards alumnus Jaydee Nomisasa recently attended the ‘Asia-Pacific Meeting of the Economic Science Association’ in Melbourne, joining experts from across the region to explore how insights into human behaviour can strengthen policy outcomes.
“One of the most valuable insights was that technically sound economic solutions depend on integration of knowledge across disciplines,” Jaydee shared.
His takeaway? Solving complex challenges requires more than technical expertise, but also understanding the people, systems, and institutions at their heart.
From mental health and healthcare to governance and economic policy, Australia Awards alumni like Jaydee are helping shape conversations that matter across the Pacific.

Clean running water for Qurasae 💧
Qurasae community in West New Georgia/Vona Vona constituency now has clean running water thanks to the Solomon Islands – Australia Community Partnerships
The project involved extracting clean water from underground water via a borehole for storage in two 10,000 litre water tanks, which is then distributed to six standpipes[HM1.1].
This project has made a big difference for the community by addressing their greatest problem – having to source from brackish water. Clean running water for drinking and household use will significantly improve hygiene and reduce the transmission of water-borne diseases for the 140 people in Qurasae.
Thank you to Hon George Temahua, MP for West New Georgia/Vona Vona, for supporting this important project.
Congratulations to the Project Team for your leadership, which has made a tangible difference in the lives of your community!

On 29th June, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan HORII Iwao and Hon. Peter Kenilorea Junior, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade signed and exchanged Notes for “the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship” (project up to one hundred and forty-nine million yen) and “The Economic and Social Development Programme (project up to one hundred and sixty-eight million yen).
Under the Scholarship Project, young Solomon Islands government officials will study at Japanese graduate schools to obtain degrees. This is expected to contribute to human resource development and institutional building within government agencies, and to enable them to demonstrate leadership and play active roles at the core of the government in the future. Beyond this, it's also anticipated that they will build networks with Japanese government officials and others in Japan, further strengthening the friendly relations between Japan and Solomon Islands.
Under the Economic and Social Development Programme, the provision of malaria diagnostic equipment are expected to enable the early detection and treatment of malaria in response to the recent surge in malaria cases, thereby reducing the risk of severe illness and mortality.
During the ceremony, Hon. Kenilorea acknowledged the cooperation between the Solomon Islands Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and JICA for making the projects possible, and he emphasised that today’s signing reaffirms the enduring partnership between Japan and Solomon Islands, and our shared commitment to the well-being of the people of Solomon Islands.

New Zealand 🇳🇿 is providing a further NZD 750,000 (around SBD 3.4 million) to support communities recovering from Tropical Cyclone Maila through three new early recovery grants.
We were delighted to be joined this week by Director Jonathan Tafiariki and Jerry Hagaria from the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office, as well as representatives from ADRA Solomon Islands, Save the Children Solomon Islands, and the Solomon Islands Association of Vocational and Rural Training Centres (SIAVRTC), to mark this important support.
The funding, delivered through New Zealand's Disaster Response Partnership, will support practical recovery activities in Western and Choiseul Provinces. This includes helping families🙎♂️🙍🙍♀️ repair homes, restore food gardens and livelihoods, improve access to safe water and sanitation, return children to school, and strengthen community preparedness for future disasters.
The three grants will reach thousands of people across affected communities:
• ADRA will support up to 2,200 people on Kolobangara and Ranongga Islands through shelter repairs, water systems, agricultural recovery and disaster preparedness activities.
• Save the Children will support around 2,280 people in Western and Choiseul Provinces through livelihood recovery, temporary learning spaces, back-to-school initiatives and school repairs.
• SIAVRTC, through Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand funding, will support approximately 4,000 people across 24 communities with food security, water and sanitation, shelter repairs and community infrastructure recovery.
These grants build on New Zealand's earlier support following Tropical Cyclone Maila, including emergency funding for NDMO, humanitarian assistance for affected communities, support to restore health services in Gizo, and the release of more than 3.5 tonnes of emergency relief supplies.
🇳🇿 is proud to stand alongside 🇸🇧 as communities recover and rebuild.

New Zealand High Commissioner Jonathan Curr was delighted to announce SBD2.3m of new wholesale capital funding for the Development Bank of Solomon Islands (DBSI), via the New Zealand funded Business Link Pacific (BLP) programme which supports private sector development in Solomon Islands.
In addition, he announced that New Zealand 🇳🇿 would provide SBD 14 million in budget support to Solomon Islands Government to support ongoing policy reform and contribute to creating an enabling environment that allows for the private sector to grow.
DBSI will contribute an equal amount of its own capital to match the SBD 2.3m provided by New Zealand, and together with the SBD 1.8m in wholesale capital provided by New Zealand in 2024 this creates a combined SME lending facility of approximately SBD 6.4 million.
High Commissioner Jonathan Curr stated that the support is designed to make finance more affordable and accessible for local businesses that are ready to invest and grow. “Small businesses are the lifeblood of any economy and are vital for government revenue through taxation and job creation”.
The support was welcomed by Minister of Finance and Treasury Hon. Gordon Darcy Lilo, as a practical demonstration of how partners can work together with government and financial institutions to deliver direct benefits to the private sector.
To access the BLP loan through DBSI, eligible businesses can contact DBSI directly or in-country partners, the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry or the Solomon Islands Business Enterprise Centre.

Last week, the New Zealand High Commission was pleased to welcome four advisers from local government in Aotearoa New Zealand to Honiara as part of the MFAT-funded Pacific TA programme.
Working alongside their peers at Honiara City Council, the team shared skills and experience across a range of priority areas including library services, building compliance, financial management, organisational performance and staff leadership.
During the visit, the advisers worked with HCC staff to strengthen budget planning and expenditure monitoring, improve building control processes, support implementation of HCC's Corporate Plan, review management of the multi-Purpose Hall, and identify opportunities to enhance library services and partnerships. 🏢💵🧍♀️🧍♂️⛹️♀️🏋️
