Learning from the Land: SINU Takes Island Knowledge Beyond the Classroom

NEWS FEATURE | Learning from the Land What happens when the classroom extends into villages, customary lands, and communities? Students in SINU's Postgraduate Diploma in Islands Knowledges and Futures recently completed the SOIL (Solutions Ontological Immersive Learning) field programme in East Are'are and West Guadalcanal, learning directly from chiefs, elders, knowledge holders, and local communities. Through immersive, place-based learning, students explored indigenous knowledge systems, customary governance, conservation, and community-led solutions, gaining valuable insights that cannot be learned from textbooks alone. This unique programme reflects SINU's commitment to education grounded in island realities, preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable future of the Solomon Islands and the Pacific. Applications for Cohort 2 (Semester 2, 2026) are now open! If you're passionate about indigenous knowledge, community engagement, and shaping island futures, this programme is for you. Applications close Friday, 7 August 2026. Collect an application form from the Student Administration Services (SAS) Office or contact admissions@sinu.edu.sb or (677) 42600 for more information.
