The conversation continues and Pacific youth are ready to shape what comes next.
Today, participants in the Pacific Youth Talanoa Series are building the skills, knowledge and confidence to influence climate action, from understanding how decisions are made to helping shape the Pacific Youth Communiqué ahead of Pre-COP31 and COP31.
Opening Talanoa 2 of the series, Martin Wandera, Director of the International Labour Organization for the Pacific Island Countries, challenged participants to move from being consulted to shaping outcomes, encouraging them to carry what they learn into the spaces where climate decisions are made.
We were honoured to welcome Sally Higgins, COP31 Presidency Youth Climate Champion, who reminded participants that while global forums help set ambition, real climate action happens every day in Pacific communities. She encouraged young people to keep leading, innovating and sharing their lived experiences, while creating more opportunities for other youth voices to be heard.
Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, also joined the Talanoa, providing participants with an overview of the UNFCCC and COP processes, the role of Pre-COP, and how Pacific youth can align their advocacy with Fiji's Pre-COP priorities. His session encouraged participants to see themselves not just as observers, but as contributors to a stronger and more unified Pacific voice on the global stage.
Throughout the day, participants put these ideas into practice, exploring how climate decisions are made, strengthening their advocacy skills and refining the Pacific Youth Communiqué, a youth-led document that will help carry Pacific priorities into the lead-up to Pre-COP31 and COP31.
The Pacific Youth Talanoa Series is co-designed and co-led by the UN in Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu & Vanuatu and the Pacific Youth Council in partnership with Pasifika Communities University and other regional organisations.

Pacific voices in regional tuna discussions
FFA Members Vanuatu, Fiji, Cook Islands and New Zealand took part in key fisheries discussions in Nagasaki, Japan, this week, alongside the FFA Secretariat.
The 11th Joint IATTC–WCPFC Northern Committee Working Group meeting on Pacific bluefin tuna management was held from 8-11 July, followed by the 22nd meeting of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission Northern Committee from 13-14 July.
Discussions covered the management of Pacific bluefin tuna, including stock recovery, long-term harvest strategies and the Catch Documentation Scheme. Members also engaged in discussions on other important northern stocks, including North Pacific albacore and northern billfishes.
The meetings are part of ongoing regional efforts to ensure tuna and other highly migratory fish stocks are managed sustainably.

Protecting the Pacific's most valuable natural resource takes teamwork, technology, and regional cooperation.
The Pacific tuna fishery is the economic backbone of many Pacific Island countries, generating vital revenue that supports schools, hospitals, livelihoods, and national development.
Through Operation Tui Moana, FFA coordinated a multinational surveillance operation bringing together fisheries, maritime, and law enforcement personnel from 10 FFA Members, with support from Australia, New Zealand, France, and the United States, to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing across the region.
Using satellite monitoring, aerial surveillance, intelligence sharing, and coordinated patrols, the operation identified suspicious vessel activity, strengthened compliance efforts, and protected the sustainable management of Pacific tuna resources.
Operation Tui Moana concluded with:
4 vessels of interest identified
2 apprehensions linked to suspected fisheries-related offences
Regional cooperation remains our strongest defence against IUU fishing. Together, we are safeguarding the Pacific's tuna resources for the benefit of our people today and for future generations.

Following the graduation in Vatulele, the journey continued in Beqa, as last Friday we celebrated community members with 118 participants graduating in Boat Master Licence and Restricted Master Engineer Class 6 certification and 16 participants completing fibreglass boat repair and maintenance training.
The occasion also included the handover of toolboxes to young trainees and maritime safety kits, helping communities put their new skills into practice and strengthen safety at sea.
As Minister for Policing and Communications Hon. Ioane Naivalurua reminded graduates, "Today is not the end of a training course, it is the beginning of a new journey."
More than a training programme, Solesolevaki ni Veitaqomaki demonstrates the power of multi-agency collaboration, bringing together Government agencies, traditional and faith leaders, communities and partners to strengthen maritime safety, support livelihoods and build more resilient coastal communities.
Congratulations to all the graduates as they join a growing network of more than 1,100 certified community members helping build safer seas across Fiji.
This initiative is implemented by the UNDP and the Ministry of Policing and Communications in collaboration with the Republic Of Fiji Navy, The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji - MSAF, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, Fiji Police Force, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and CATD, Nadave with the generous support of the UK in Fiji.

Fisheries observers spend long periods at sea, often far from home, helping protect one of the Pacific's most valuable resources.
On board fishing vessels, they collect important scientific data, monitor fishing activities and help make sure fisheries rules are being followed. Their work also supports regional efforts to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Shaping the future of civic education in Fiji

Young leaders in Fiji recently participated in the Political Parties Pilot Programme delivered through the Fijian Elections Office Institute of Democracy and Electoral Education in partnership with International IDEA. The participants were alumni of Fiji’s 2025 Youth Parliament Programme, bringing their experiences and perspectives as young advocates for democratic participation to the pilot process.
Following completion of the week-long online course, participants came together in Suva for a two-day interactive workshop to explore the role of political parties in a representative democracy, discuss democratic participation, and put the pilot course to the test.
More than a training programme, this pilot was an opportunity for participants to help shape the future of civic and electoral education in Fiji. Through practical activities, open discussions, and structured feedback, the Youth Parliament alumni provided valuable recommendations on the relevance, accessibility, and effectiveness of the course content and learning materials.
The insights gathered will now be used to refine the course and inform the development of future IDEE civic education modules on democracy, elections, constitutions, and local governance. A big thank you to the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji Youth Parliament alumni who contributed their time, ideas, and honest feedback. Your contributions will help create more engaging, relevant, and inclusive civic education resources for young people across Fiji.

UNPLANNED WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION: LOW TANK LEVELS - TASAHE, TITINGE, LENGAKIKI, SKYLINE AND EAST KOLA RESERVOIR SUPPLY AREAS
Solomon Water advises customers supplied from the Tasahe, Titinge, Lengakiki, Skyline and East Kola Reservoirs that water supply has been affected due to a major burst on the Ngossi Borefield pumping main.
The repeated bursts on this pipeline have disrupted water production and reduced reservoir levels. As a result, customers in these areas may continue to experience low water pressure or temporary water outages while repairs are underway.
Our Maintenance Team is working to repair the burst and we will continue to provide updates on the situation.
